New Job Concerns

Recently started a new job and feel my manager is a bit of a bully/ on a power trip. My working hours at 9-3 but he insists I am there for 8.40/8.45 in order to run the start of day processes and I barely ever get out in time either. Last week, I worked a total of 1 hour and 45mins extra unpaid and nothing is said about it, it’s just expected. I feel like it’s a lot to expect from someone. Even 15/20 min unpaid every single day is a lot - it’s over an hour each week. Is this an unlawful deduction of wages?

When I worked at ALDI you were expected to be ready to report for work fifteen minutes early (unpaid) to check the float of your till

Strangely, this wasn't mentioned at the interview

They also tried to stop you taking your legal breaks

I left after three months

The higher the wage, the more awful the Employer.

The last place a call centre, for an incredibly good salary but very little else, insisted you start 15 minutes before the nominated published shift time every day. Yep, 15 minutes equates to over 1 hour every week.

An Insurance call centre on sales entry level wouldn't allow you to log in until the actual very second due on duty to the point it used to mess up your stats to log in any earlier on the phone 5 years ago in an Insurance firm for earning around 10k less.

If its not some super well paid role, you could end up under NMW, so check that out. Most places expect the occasional bit of of overtime here and there, but certainly shouldn't be expected daily. If its every day that suggests the working hours/no of staff to do the job is inappropriate. My new job has this weird thing where no one gets up to leave but I need to to get the bus home. I'm also in 15 mins earlier than everyone else so if its ever mentioned they're getting hit with that - although I hope to be gone soon!

It does depend on where you work but I expect staff to be ready for work at their start time… so if it’s 9am, I’m expecting them to be getting on and dealing with customers, not just taking their coat off and making a cup of tea. Btw - They are able to have tea at their desks 😊
As a previous poster said, any start of day processes should be part of your working hours and if not, then check your hours meet the NMW.

Thanks all! Id expect to be in work and at my desk ready to start for 9am, coffee made. But we are expected to be there at 20/15 to every day in order to do safety checks, cash tills etc before 9am. If we arrive at 10 to 9, we are told off for being late. I find it really frustrating because we are not paid until 9. Over the year it’s over £700 of wages! We also regularly don’t get to leave sharp at our finishing times. It’s a new job and my manager will 100% say I’m being lazy if I complain but I feel like he’s taking advantage and pushing his luck!
