Dual Nationality Preventing a Job Oppo

Ropedin · 04/09/2023 10:50

My brother has recently secured a job which carries a security risk as is involved with military bases. As such, the job offer has presented with the caveat; that he would need to revoke his dual nationality (British/Italian). Hesitantly, he understands the scope of the opportunity and is willing to make this sacrifice.

However, he is unable to get in contact with anybody at the Italian embassy, the phone lines are open 1 hr a day and consistently engaged, the booking system is showing no appointments (whatsoever). He is at a loss, has anybody done this before or have any tips for getting through to the Italian Embassy in the UK.

TIA!

IMO it’s madness to give up a nationality for any job. Is he really prepared to do that?? It may well cost him quite a lot of money, I know relinquishing British nationality is vv expensive. Not sure about Italian

Has he already gathered the documents he needs and contacted them by email? That's what the instructions say to do first :

Dual nationality is allowed these days for all levels of security clearance (didn’t used to be) he might want to have a conversation with the security team before doing anything.

Dual nationality isn’t allowed for eyes only

Quite common in Defence. My friend, Previously British passport holder took dual nationality and didn't get SC because of it.

It really depends on the role.

Has he tried attending the Embassy in person OP? Or looking up their staff and contacting directly?

Also not the point of this post but if he's 'hesitant' (i.e. not 100% sure) he really shouldn't be giving up his EU nationality under current conditions.

He hasn't. We are North West based so it is a long way to go for what could be a wasted journey, but this might have to be the next step.

Yes, he is still hesitant, however understands that this particular job role will ensue a career for life and the pros of such far outweigh the pros of the dual nationality, i.e. - buying property & residing in Italy, accepting work there, etc. So deep down knows it is what needs to be done.

Thanks for the advice re; looking up their staff, I will try this.

I wasn't thinking about Italy (if anything it's worse than the UK) but other EU countries. Things are getting worse post-Brexit in the UK and anybody who has an escape route would do well to keep hold of it.
Take it from an immigrant... it isn't easy to get the right to work elsewhere, even if you're in a shortage profession like me you're reliant on your employers for a good few years and so trapped, at their mercy.

Anyway I just thought of another idea - is there a Facebook groups for Italians in the UK?

I'm in one for my country and there are often posts on how to reach the Embassy. Don't say on the post that it's to revoke his citizenship say he needs to contact them for a marriage query, child citizenship or similar. I posted on there when my Embassy was in a similar situation (uncontactable by phone, official email etc) and a few people posted emails/phone numbers that worked, but were nowhere to be found on the official website!

These things get passed around people 'in the know'...

CallistaFlockfart · 05/09/2023 13:41

Relinquishing his Italian citizenship will also remove his access to free movement in the whole of the EU.

Mingusthebrave · 05/09/2023 16:21

It will also remove free access to the EU for his children or any future children he may have.

I'm in the process of trying to reclaim my French nationality to give my children the option of going to work and live in the EU - it looks like it is going to take a good couple of years, thousands of pounds and masses of patience and tenacity!

Don't give it up lightly!
The world is a lot smaller with just a British passport
