New job/vetting/notice period.

Hi,

I've been offered a new job which requires vetting. I have to give 5 weeks notice but I don't know what will happen if I give the notice and then the vetting takes longer so I can't start on the date expected. The old job will fill my job within a week of me handing my notice in so I'm not sure I can stay but I also can't have 2 months of no work.

I also work TTO so I'm a bit stressed about how the wage will work going from TTO to full time. I'll only be working for about 6 weeks before I go into time off.

Thanks in advance.

When I was offered a role with vetting I was told not to hand my notice in on my old job until clearance was through - the new job knew they would then have to wait for my notice period.

As above - my company has to vet all applicants and we always advise not to hand in notice until it has been completed. The new company will have factored the additional timing in.

I had a job with vetting, they told me not to hand in my notice until I got clearance. They are used to the process, I think and just accept people cannot risk being out of work whilst it all goes through. It probably varies but mine took about 4 weeks.

I know I'm not handing it in yet. The problem is the start date needs 5 weeks notice and at least 3 of those are still within the time frame for vetting. The new company is planning on the start date being correct with the vetting coming through in time.

Basically new company doesn't think there will be any issue with vetting(neither do I, no skeletons in my closet) but its possible that it could take longer this time. Like with a passport, some turn up in 2 weeks and some take 3 months.

What vetting are you going through? BPSS, SC or DV?

I have no idea. It was online through a link sent by the company.

I don't get your bits about the weeks in your update. When I got a new role requiring clearance this was my time line.

May: Received job offer, and told not to hand in notice until vetting completed
August: Vetting complete, hand in notice
Decmber: last day of work in previous role on 31 December, I was teaching so wasn't allowed to leave until end of term
January: started new role on 3rd.

Blimey I'm wondering what sector you're in that can fill a vacancy at s weeks notice! It's a job hunters market at moment

Misses whole point of the thread Hmm

I needed SC for my new job. Had BPSS at old job. I handed my notice in and didn't start the SC process until I actually started in new job. This is common in my industry.
Someone also mentioned that they can't legally get SC on you unless you work for the company but that can't be true based on the other replies!

Edited

I recieved a job offer with an October start date. Vetting can take up to 12 weeks. If I hand my notice in on the correct date, there's an overlap of a few weeks where the vetting may not arrive on time. I could end up not being able to start in October because I have to be vetted before. The next intake isn't till January so in theory I would either hand my notice in and not start so have 2 months unpaid or start.

Internal vacancy will fill it quickly.

It's a crap job but perceived as being a good one because of where it is.

I've emailed payroll and the new company.

The recruitment woman is going to chase the vetting before I have to hand my notice in, they're keen on me starting in October and not January.

Payroll have told me how to work out my wage so I should be financially fine after I hand my notice in and start the new job which is much better money so that's helped!
