I’ve been in my current job for the last five years. I work as an Admin Clerk and have no aspirations to do anything else. I plan to retire in five years anyway.
I’m struggling to know what to say in my 1:1s. I tend to repeat a few things, ie. we’re so busy right now (we are…), I’ve learned new processes, things feel clearer (mostly) but I’m really not bothered about moving on, up, across or whatever.
Is it just me? What do I say in the 1:1s?

Just give an update against your objectives. 1:2:1s can be quick but also an opportunity to talk about any wider issues.

Have a think about what you want to do when you retire, do you want to stop or do a phased approach. Are there any courses that fit your role but also may give you options in retirement? It’s a little early for a pre-retirement course but other courses may be an option.

How often are your having a 1-1? I sometimes cancel mine if I have nothing to discuss. I check with my manager he has nothing he wants to discuss of course. It's pointless wasting both your time.

In general though I go through any questions I have, he gives me a bit of work maybe, we have a general personal chit-chat. I'm a PA though so probably a bit different.

I'm in a similar position OP - I never know what to say either. I was recently asked to set "goals" for my role. Honestly, I'm perfectly happy sitting in the corner doing what I'm asked and trying to make it to the weekend.

Thankfully my manager gets it and just asks whether I have any problems or need anything and we leave it at that!

So no advice, but you have my sympathy.

@Saverage Once a month usually. It’s a total waste of both our times.

@NotTHEBupcake I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been asked similar and couldn’t think of one thing to suggest. We’re so busy that I just crack on with the job. I’ve no aspirations of moving any higher and sitting in a corner would suit me too!

Once a month Shock that seems OTT. Why not reflect back to your manager ... 'I really enjoy my role, I liked working on X project ... is there anything you would like to raise with me?'.

Ask them if there's any feedback they have for you
