How long would you give a job before moving on?

I hate being stuck in a job hopping cycle, I did it for many years until I came across a job I stayed in for 10+ years, I’d still be there only they closed, post that job I appear to be back in the job hop cycle, the last job I posted about on here lasted 3 months, this job I’m in 2 and it’s not going well either.

I think you just kinda know you’re not a fit, currently I’m the oldest team member and im only 42, I’m most experienced yet since day 1 I’ve been working with the trainees and part time students, not training them either I’ll add but doing the same menial work as them, im just a bit too long in the tooth to go through that all again at this stage. The money is decent I’ll add probably just pride and ego stopping me.

I would always advise giving it 6 months minimum - thats time to settle in and understand the job enough to know what it really involves, and get over any discomfort about 'change'.

Only if it is truly awful would it be wise to move before that (but if it IS that bad, then move whenever you need to)

I should add that if you can get to 6months before you start applying, then it will be nearer 9-12 before starting a new position (with receuitment processes and notice period) so your pride and ego should be intact with a 12-month position on your CV!

It always takes 6 months to settle into a role IME

I could have wrote your post OP. Im now on eleven months and thinking of hopping. Just some very unsavoury characters that management are too weak to deal with.

Is there a magic number? Is a year less judged?

Its really hard to advise without more info.

Are you applying for the right level/grade? Ie are you applying for jobs that are right for your skill and experience level or do you lack confidence and you are underselling yourself and ending up in junior positions that don't fit?

Is the training or onboarding one size fits all for everyone and do you just need to wait it out?

Can you smash the training and complete it all and exceed app targets and then discuss completing it early?

What does your LM say in your 121 when you discuss next steps? Have you told them you feel capable of doing more given your background? When is your probation period due to end and what is the feedback so far.

If you provide industry or role experience people can advise.

In my industry it can take even the most experienced person almost six months to be 'useful'. In a lot of industries the probation period is 6 months as thats how long it takes to know.

Id also give some serious thought as to what the cause was the job hopping is. Is it the employer? Are you applying for the wrong thing? Are you grieving the 10 yr job, is it you? Have you unrealistic expectations or lost confidence or is it time for a change in industry and to shake things up.

At the interview it was the boss / owner who interviewed me, was impressed with my background etc, offered me the job on the spot with a decent wage.

Then I go in and the manager took over, (boss doesn’t actually play a part in day to day things I’ve learned) it became apparent that there was no where for me to fit in really, they had no junior staff and couldn’t get any students in for summer work so that’s where I’ve landed and can’t upset the apple cart by giving me anything more to my skill level. But you know the frustrating part? Because your stuck doing this it is assumed then you know nothing and even the simplest of tasks are explained to you like you’re thick.

Okay it’s all not too tasking, it’s really my ego has taken a knock big time I guess
