Do you fly Premium Economy or Business for work?

certica · 17/08/2023 10:00

I have a work trip soon to New York. Day flight out, night flight back. I'm junior so my flight is in Premium Economy. My manager is coming and she is in Business class.

Just wondered if this is normal? For leisure trips I only fly Business.

This is normal, plus it's not a really long flight to NYC

certica · 17/08/2023 10:04

Doh. I meant to write, "For leisure trips I only fly Economy"!

Only ever Economy for me, no matter what the distance (inc Australia). Officially, no one in the company is allowed to fly anything else without special exception (I am under no illusion that the C suite won't have an exemption)

I only ever get economy so yes I'd be happy with that!

CMOTDibbler · 17/08/2023 10:20

@Fiddleyflop yep, the last time I went there I landed 9pm, got to bed at about midnight, had a 7am meeting.

FredaFox · 17/08/2023 10:20

Company only ever pats economy, you are very lucky
Enjoy your perks

Premium Economy or Business usually for DH depending on the length of the trip. As far as I know it’s not based on seniority. Premium Economy to NY will probably be just right!

LubaLuca · 17/08/2023 10:25

Yes, business class for all flights over a certain distance (seniority doesn't come into it). We don't have any other European offices, just USA and Asia, so it's always business.

SaltyGod · 17/08/2023 10:25

I wrangle premium economy but it’s meant to be economy. Obviously I have no doubt the C-suite are in business.

I will upgrade myself to business on longer flights if it isn’t too expensive.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/08/2023 10:28

I work in travel and companies do all sorts. I would be in business if I was travelling for work though.

I’m going to ask it…, your junior, but only fly business? Really?

Applesaarenttheonlyfruit · 17/08/2023 10:29

You’re

continentallentil · 17/08/2023 10:30

We’re a small media company so economy. I’d always try and get premium economy for night flights.

If the company is doing well enough she can fly business, happy days.

Many would - business class is screamingly expensive.

Usually it’s much cheaper to fly people out a day early, which is what we’d do for long distance.

They corrected this further up as a typo to say only fly economy.

FawnFrenchieMum · 17/08/2023 10:35

Our policy states over 8 hours is business, anything under is ecomony, unless you fly overnight and are expected straight into the office at the other side then you can use Prem Ecom.

In reality, we use our judgement and asses the cost difference and look at different time flights to get cheaper upgrades.

C-Suite tend to go business most of the time to our US office. Although where we are based is only 6/7 hours.

Katrinawaves · 17/08/2023 10:36

My last job had lots of international travel and the policy was under 6 hours economy, 6-10 hours premium economy and over 10 hours business unless you were C suite.

As the flight time from London to New York was 5 hours 50 mins out but 6 hours back, it meant we always flew our economy and back premium economy. I tended to save my airmiles and upgrade to premium economy both ways for the East Coast trips - as I did lots of long haul travel in business I always had plenty to play with though.

certica · 17/08/2023 10:40

How does it work at your office/company? At my old one, we booked ourselves by showing that we were going for a reasonable option and then claimed it back.

My current company uses a third party to book it. They ask what time flights you want and then send you the options. But for example, the best price I have been quoted is £2,400. I can see some non-direct flights for £1,100, I'd be more than happy to go that route as I like the airline. Would your company ever let you go with that cheaper but less convenient flight if you requested?

BCCoach · 17/08/2023 10:42

Under 12 hours total flight time economy, above that business if we are paying for it but on a project where expenses are billed to the client it’s always economy regardless. The vast majority of my travel is client projects so unfortunately that always means economy for me. We are allowed to use our miles for upgrades though which is what I do as they just go to waste otherwise (never fly for leisure/holidays etc).

CMOTDibbler · 17/08/2023 10:53

@certica we have to justify why we aren't taking the cheaper non direct flight anyway, so we'd absolutely be able to do that.

I could fly out a day early, but personally couldn't justify doing that as I'm a frequent traveller. Sometimes I can't get out on the last working day of a trip and get a nice day off somewhere and can still expense meals etc, but I'd rather be home
