NHS employees, how difficult is it to get a job in the NHS?

I’m applying for a band 4 position and have been told by multiple people that it is very unlikely I will get a job without already working in the NHS on bank or working my way up. I’ve heard NHS have to advertise positions but usually have people in mind already and advertise as a formality.

looking for advice to see if I’m getting my hopes up for nothing

It really depends on what job you're looking for, the region and your previous experience. Not having worked in the NHS wouldn't count against you if you have relevant experience or qualifications. Good luck!

I would say quite unlikely to get a band 4 post without relevant experience in the area you are applying for.
Usually it's our band 3 staff applying for promotion in the service they work in.

Utter rubbish. Band 4 is a strange one because a lot of HCA type jobs are band 3, and some additional training or responsibility make it up to band 4 so they can be quite sought after for non-qualified staff, and there may be people in band 3 positions who will be keen to apply. But it really does depends on what the role is!!

Well the nhs is so short staffed at the moment that there isn't anyone there for them to have in mind!
Depends on what the role is but they'll be looking for qualifications, relevant experience or transferable skills

What type of job is it OP and do you meet the person specification as that is what they shortlist you on?

Skygarden1zero · 14/08/2023 13:30

I disagree that they always have people in mind as this isn't generally always the case. Also, in my work place I know a lot of band 2 and 3 staff who are simply happy staying at that band. Not every band 2 or 3 will want progression. Agree that to work at band 4 level you need some relevant experience, not necessarily of the department you're applying for but at least experience using some of those skills advertised for the role.

Surely depends what the role is. Plenty band 4 admin, yes they have someone in mind that's become part of the furniture but isn't good for the role. Lots of nepotism for sure.

Clinical or technical is often less so as they need someone who can do the role (hopefully). Go for it and good luck, just ensure you match your supporting statement to the job spec carefully.
