Redundancy

Hi, I’m being made redundant in a fortnight from a shop job I’ve worked in for years. This may be a daft question but what do I need to do? Do I need to tell HMRC or does my boss do that? I don’t claim benefits and I’m getting redundancy pay which will tide me over for a while - I intend to take a short break from working (whilst I work out what to do with my life…). Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

You don't need to do anything, it's all via payroll.

Suggest you sign on to get your NI/pension contributions paid though.

Thanks Agnes, hadn’t thought of that.

Your employer should sort out the payment and filings with HMRC but you can ask them to check that your tax etc was calculated properly
Sign up for benefits and use the services to help you find a new direction via training

Redundancy: your rights

Being made redundant - rights, statutory payments you're entitled to, notice periods and consultation, finding a job.

@Midwinterblues definitely sign on. Also make sure you get any refund of tax. You usually get tax back when you start a new job if you give them your P45 but may have to wait for the end of the tax year.

You can sign on for NI linked unemployment benefit, which you can claim even if you have savings as it is linked to how many years you've paid NI. I think you can claim it for 2 years. It's a v low rate but as PP mentioned it protects your NI status and also you're entitled to it so worth claiming while job hunting.
Sorry to hear about your redundancy. It can be hard to swallow even when you know it's nothing personal.

Thanks AnSolas. I’ve got a lot to think about- I’ve worked for the same business for twenty years so it’s a long time since I’ve had to think about applying for jobs, tax, benefits etc. I’m feeling a bit out of my depth… I appreciate your comment and link, thanks.

Thanks Sister and Yuko, I wrongly assumed that I wouldn’t be eligible for any benefit as I have just over £16,000 in savings. I’ll definitely sign on.
