Career change from decent pay?

I'm considering a major career change and need a sense check please.

Am early 40s and have a mid-senior role in comms - it's decent pay that covers my bit of the mortgage and living expenses. Current job can be done from home, 4 days a week and works well around the kids (11 and 14).

The trouble is, I don't find it fulfilling. I fell into this career by default. Started out in journalism, wanting to cover human interest/cultural issues - but fell into a niche of businesses journalism then B2B comms. I perform well in it and have recently been promoted and am on track for a more senior role (they told me) - but while it's very flexible and the people are really nice - it's not what I want.

I'm feeling increasingly cut off WFH in a screen-based job and would love to work directly with people in a community setting, ideally in a caring role.

Would it be crazy/impossible to career change as an OT and retrain while still working in comms?

I've found a 4-year p/t degree course and had a successful interview - but the training includes several weeks of F/T placements. This obvs rules out working during this placements. You can apply for NHS funding to train but it's not guaranteed and only 5k per year.

Married to DH on a similar salary and we both need to keep up our earnings to cover costs. I have around £10k savings.

Stay put in satisfactory but unfulfilling role and find meaningful things outside of career, or pursue career change before the chance passes for good?

No real advice, but watching with interest, as I’m currently battling with the same dilemma. Realistically couldn’t make the change for another year or so, as we currently have 2 in nursery, and have just bought a house which has wiped most of our savings, but I feel so unfulfilled in my seemingly very comfortable, well paid job.

@101dalmatians it's tough isn't it. Your kids are still very young - are you looking into training you can fit around your current job?

Can I ask what careers you're considering changing from and to?

@101dalmatians similars situation here in that we've just bought a house. And taken on a bigger mortgage, so def can't afford to even hit pause on work Confused

No idea but I feel the same. I earn good money but I feel so unfulfilled. I keep looking at similar jobs in the sector but I just don't have enthusiasm for any of them.
I too think I would like to move into the care sector would love to do paediatric nursing but I just don't how we could realistically do it.
My younger one starts school this time and I currently work 4 days a week so hoping to use the 5th to do volunteering at the hospital. I hope that will either give me the fulfilment I need or confirm that I just need to make the change.

Good luck whatever you decide.
