Civil service interview outcome, to chase or not to chase?

I had an interview two weeks ago for a G7 role (1 post available). Was told by interview panel they would have results to recruitment within a couple of days but that the portal can be quite slow. They said regardless of outcome I would hear via civil service jobs.

Still no update. I know this is normal but I would've thought with it being 1 post it wouldn't take this length of time. The cynic in me is thinking they would surely call the preferred candidate after interview for a G7 role, therefore they must've known at the time I wasn't successful.

Interview went fine, could've been much better so I don't have high hopes, but I would just like some closure either way.

Should I send a polite note to the hiring manager asking for an update on timeline?

Oh my sweet summer child. I would never expect to hear the outcome of a civil service interview in less than 2 weeks. It could still go either way. And if you actually get the job, it could easily be 6 months before you start.
All of which to say: don't bother chasing.

I've regularly sit on panels for civil service jobs, including grade 7. The successful candidate nearly always knows the day after the final interview and the rest of the candidates are informed ASAP after that. Therefore I would definitely chase - what have got to lose?

Nothing to lose by sending a polite email to ask when they expect results to be released - sometimes things go wrong with the process.

Be aware that a couple of departments have had a recruitment pause and that may account for the delay

Govt Departments have different policies on notifying candidates early of outcomes - In my current dept I am not allowed to call the preferred candidate and have to notify though CS jobs. Our HR are really prompt tho so it never takes more than a couple of days once the panel has moderated interview results - which we do within a day of the last interview.

My last dept I was allowed to call the person I wanted to offer the job to immediately, but it would take HR weeks to process the formal offer.

Send an email to the contact on the job ad for an update, no harm done either way, it won't change the outcome.

Perhaps one of the other candidates is sick so they are having to wait until they return to complete the interviews. It used to be standard to call the preferred candidate with a verbal offer but HR may advise against this until checks have concluded.
