To cut a long story short I have worked in this company for a year as a manager. Small business but successful. Over that year I have transformed the structure of the business and gone above my objectives. I work directly to the ceo. We recently employed a new employee at director level on £20k more than me. No problem with that as it is a different role. However in my annual review yesterday I was promoted to director. I am literally over the moon!! But ceo asked me what I was expecting salary rise. I went blank and so need to figure this out to not look like an idiot. Do I ask for the same level as the other director? Seems a big jump to me or do I ask for an extra £10k? As I said I small company and not big budgets. I also find these things awkward and don’t want to appear greedy. However I don’t want to undervalue myself and as a single parent to two teens the extra salary would defo help! Advise please? Many thanks

You don’t just ask for, you absolutely expect to be paid the same as the other director. Why on Earth would you expect less! Do not sell yourself short.

they know they have a good worker in you. Don’t undersell yourself.

Why sell yuurself short?
Ask for 25k or more.

When you say sucessful business and transformed the structure what are the bottom line figures
What is the new sale value of the business
has annual income / market share / sales gone up has annual costs gone down
long term is business better?

how come they hired a new employee at you+20k?

Is that the open market value of a director?
You have a proven track record and taking the same level of responsibility why should the CEO value the director role you are taking up less than the other directorship?

Definitely ask for 25k more and do it with confidence.

You will hopefully then get the 20k!

Congratulations 🎉

Asking for 20k to level you up with the new hire, is sensible.

It means you have recent market evidence that shows that salary is justified and in line with market expectations.

Thanks everyone was brave and asked to be put in line with the other director. I think CEO was not thinking the same but havent had a formal response yet. We shall see. x
