Can manager deny you the toilet

My manager has said no to me and colleagues when asking to use the toilet. I have been on my period before and told no and I was really uncomfortably bleeding.
Is this against our human right? It feels so wrong. She says we have to wait nd then we can't go for over an hour

I work in a shop, I work 4 hour shifts and get a 5 minute loo break half way, i can't leave any other time (I'm fine with this)

Hello all, we're getting some reports about this thread. Although we can never vouch for anyone, the OP has been with us a while and their posting history is pretty consistent. We don't think this is our resident wee troll.

Sorry to interrupt OP - hope you can get this sorted.

magicalkitty · 08/08/2023 19:47

Jesus Christ. In a shop surely a colleague can just hop on the checkout for a few minutes?

Waterweir · 08/08/2023 19:48

@FirstFallopians . In a large school there isn't anyone standing outside the door to provide cover. You have to report it to an office the other side of school and they will have to find someone. It may mean finding a teacher who appears to be free on the timetable but isn't easily found ( photocopying etc). It might take a while to find someone available. I felt very very faint once and asked the teacher next door to stand between out two classrooms ( both had large windows that opened onto the walkway / corridor so I could leave for a few minutes. The school admin lady stood in front of my class until I felt a bit better and went back in.
Students are quick to talk about their human rights with regard to loo access but teachers don't have the same right.

There was a thread the other day about the teacher sacked for not noticing a child touch the hot glue gun she was using for a D and T lesson. Can you imagine if that teacher had left the classroom? She did not leave just turned her back and still got sacked. It's all about the risk assessment. Teachers cannot pop out for a few minutes.

FirstFallopians · 08/08/2023 22:56

@Waterweir that might be relevant if the OP worked in education, in a caring profession or with responsibility for children or vulnerable people.

But she works in retail. You’d have to go a long way to convince me that it’s ever ok to expect someone working in a customer service/ sales assistant role to ever have to wait for an extended period of time to go to the loo as she has described.

In that incident the teacher had split the class up "between the Year 6 classroom, a neighbouring breakout room and the adjoining art room." and moving between them leaving the 10 year olds unattended with the glue gun she did not just simply turn her back.

She was also not "sacked for not noticing a child touch the hot glue gun" she was investigated for a string of bad decisions and not following procedures that led to a child being injured.

Where on earth do you work that you have to ask permission to go to the toilet?

What a stupid and unhelpful answer. There are plenty of jobs where this is the case, where cover needs to be provided so you can take a toilet break.

WTF? No-one would ever be stopping ME going to the bloody toilet! Confused

Just as well you don't work in a caring role, as a teacher, with vulnerable adults or kids, or in any other customer facing role with any degree of responsibility, then. You can't just pop off to the loo whenever you feel like it if cover isn't available. Lucky you if you have an office job or don't work.
