Nhs secondment how does it work?

Can anyone explain how it works?
im currently on a fixed term contract and this opportunity has come up.

In my NHS organisation you need to ask your current line manager's permission to apply for a secondment.

Assuming you are successful in getting the secondment at the end of it you return to your original post (assuming that your fixed term contract hasn't finished).

I think it depends on the trust. Just checked our policy and a secondment wouldn’t be approved on a fixed term contract. You would have to apply and if successful it would become another fixed term contact and you would have no right to return to your previous fixed term contract once it ends (which you would if you had a substantive role)

Thanks was planning on telling her tomorrow just wanted to find out more first.

My fixed term is shorter than the length of the secondment.

Yes definitely this! Ask your current line manager for permission.

It's really common (in nursing anyways) that when the secondment ends, you apply for the permanent post. I didn't however and ran back to band 5 nursing 😂
