I work for the NHS (support worker in the community)and am being made redundant the end of march.I applied for a similar position in a hospital setting and got an email today and i am feeling quite peeved.I have been invited to a written competency assessment next month and the result of that will decide if i get an interview.I know for a fact that one of my collegues has just been offered a position at the same hospital but on a different ward but doing the same job.She did not have to go and do this test just a very brief interview. She has much less experience than me and no more qualifications.
So how come i have to do this assessment?

Keep looking on the website for updated vacancies. How close are you to Warks?

Are they competing against you for the same job or are they going for the job on the different ward?

I know it is hard. Is there a union rep or HR person you can talk to about the process, someone who can reassure you that this is completely normal but an inconsistent process?

I work in Social Services and local managers carry out the selection processes for vacancies within their own teams. If we have 5 Care Officer posts in 5 different posts there would probably be 5 different ways of selecting the successful candidate.

Please don't panic, it sounds completely normal.

Is that for the same position in the same department as the one you applied for, or for the same position in a different department?

What's happening to you does seem unfair, but it also sounds like there are quite a few jobs available at the hospital, even if there are lots of applicants from your current employer.

Good luck with the test if you go ahead with your application, or with hunting for other jobs.

By the way, I still think it is odd that you are in a redundancy situation. If you want to email me I can give you more support off the board if you are willing to provide further information. llareggubmn @ gmaildotcom

Obviously no gaps and a proper dot!

Ring up the HR department at the hospital and ask them about it. It is unlikely that it's the same post because I can't imagine any managers wanting to run paralel processes (just because would be a terrible hassle), and HR should not allow them to in any case. Most likely scenario is that there are several jobs at the same level being offered by different wards or departments and therefore with interview processes run by different managers. HR should know about all positions being offered and be able to let you know what is going on and if there are discrpancies sort them out. My HR team (I work for a PCT) certainly would stamp on any discriminatory practices, and I'm sure they aren't unusual. It's also worth talking to them about your concerns about your dyscalcula - you shoudl also speak to your own HR team abotu that because they should be able to support you getting tested.
