Would you drop money for this?

I had a fab job last year, fully remote position, great company, fantastic bosses and lots of support. Dream job really. Sadly the company didn’t survive the pandemic went under, and I found myself being made redundant. As I have my mortgage and bills to pay I had to find something quickly, and found what I thought would be a great opportunity albeit further afield with a commute I’d rather avoid.

Fast forward over a year, I like my job (I don’t love it), I have a great team, but a terrible boss, for many reasons, she lies, gate keeps, has swore at people, is very unsupportive and makes many of us feel on edge. Not to mention dumps piles of work on us last minute. I am stressed and run down. I have a commute that takes over an hour each way, often more with the traffic, and I have little to no time to fit in the gym, my sports etc. I leave the house at 7:45am and I get home at 6:45pm. They hate WFH, and make a huge fuss if someone asks for it. They’re thinking of scrapping it all together. Not to mention my travel expenses are almost £220 a month.

i have been looking for roles but the job market is so busy right now, jobs are seeing hundreds of applicants. There are a few roles I’m considering that are about £3k less than my existing salary. However, two roles are 10 mins from my home, offer 3 days WFH and 2 days office.

my question is, would you take a role that’s £3k less if it meant getting a better work life balance again? I’m finding this is becoming more appealing than the money

Absolutely yes.

navithefairy · 26/07/2023 15:09

Depends very much on your financial situation, how much the £3k matters to you and if you can manage without it.

I would always prioritise my mental health and wellbeing over a job as long as I had enough to live on.

TrueScrumptious · 26/07/2023 15:10

Yes. You will be paying not far off that on travel for your commute now.

Dragonsandcats · 26/07/2023 15:11

If I could afford it I would. Not much difference when you consider your current travel costs.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 26/07/2023 15:11

So you would save 2640 a year from not commuting? Yeah I would go for it as it's basically the same money.

Flipin · 26/07/2023 15:11

Do it!

Do the maths on how much you are spending on extra clothing for work and commuting. You might not be much worse off.

Covgal83 · 26/07/2023 15:14

100% if you can afford it!

piglet81 · 26/07/2023 15:15

So you’d save

Commuting cost 12 months x £220 = £2,640

plus

Commuting time 2 hrs x 5 days x 47 weeks = 470 hours

Seems like a no brainer to me!

Hi @Herewegoagain22 yes i would take 3k less for work life balance.
I would defo leave the current job and go for the other job 👍

milkshakeandchips5 · 26/07/2023 15:20

I would go for the job. If you're offered it, ask them to match your current salary. For £3k most companies will flex.

flowertoday · 28/07/2023 16:56

I am in a similar situation. I am desperate to work closer to home. I hate all the time I spend driving and when you think about wear and tear on a car ( not just petrol costs ) it makes it seem better to take a reduction in wages for an increase in time and wellbeing.

PickledPurplePickle · 28/07/2023 16:59

You’re not really dripping though are you

if you gross up your commenting costs, this must be more then the £3k gross drop in wages

Jammylou · 28/07/2023 21:07

Absolutely if I could afford it and you'll have less travel costs so loss wouodnt be £3k.
