Salary?

I don't really understand how salary works. I've always been paid hourly.
I've just been offered a job that's salaried but it's £18,500 a year, 35 hours a week. But then the hourly rate works out as less than £10.42. Those 35 hours don't include any unpaid breaks. Surely that's not right? Unless I'm working it out wrong?

Even though I'm just a waitress/bartender, I've always earnt over minimum wage so switching to min wage and salaried is odd.

What age are you? I wonder if that's the rate for a younger applicant and they made a mistake in the offer letter.

I'm in my 30's and they know that. The 18.5k was reiterated in a phonecall this morning as well, so not just a mistake in the offer.

Money saving expert (link below) states:

If you're 23 or older, and working 35 hours a week, your annual salary must be at least £18,964.

I wonder if the company have worked this out wrong or haven't taken account of the latest increase in minimum wage

Doesn't sound like a place that really values their staff if you have to point this out to them! Unless they are topping this up with tips? - Might be worth checking.

I'm a little bit frustrated because during the interview process the owner kept making a point about how fair the wages are, good salary etc. and then they come back to me with this.

I thought the hours (set shifts, no evenings, 1 weekend off a month - unheard of in hospitality) would be worth taking such a huge paycut but now I'm reconsidering.

Do the hours include unpaid breaks eg someone who works 9-4 but gets a 30 min lunch will be in work 35 hrs but only get paid 32.5 hrs.

Nosalary · 25/07/2023 22:44

No, breaks aren't included in it. Including breaks my hours are 37.5

I had this but with a dodgy pay weekly company this time, last year.
Tried to pay £18k to a 30 plus year old in May 2022, a week later they told me I did so well I could be paid £19k, never asked for ID etc which normally a business should ask for, it was like they made up stuff as they went along.

A difficult business to work for, there was at least 3 weeks they made no payment of wages.
