Payroll mystery

PADDY17 · 24/07/2023 20:05

Hi. So we think our daughter might by lying to us about something. (Whole other thread needed for that)
However, she recently had to open up a new bank account and told us that she put her bank details in incorrectly on to their online payroll system. So she said her wages bounced back. Believable enough one would think.
But she still received a payslip. I asked her to show me the payslip. Again another back story.
On the payslip the method of payment said cash??? Surely it would say eft no? Why would it say cash?
Thanks in advance.

How old is she?

okiedokie1 · 24/07/2023 20:10

How old is she? Is there a reason you are monitoring her pay?

Hellocatshome · 24/07/2023 20:10

Very very few places pay wages in cash now, especiones that provide payslips.

PADDY17 · 24/07/2023 20:17

She is 19 and we believe she may be taking drugs. In fact we know she has in the past. She has moved out of home recently and had a healthy bank balance before that. Now we have had to give her over a thousand euro to help her pay back money she "borrowed" from "friends"
We ate out of our minds with worry about her and the latest lie is the wages one.

She is an adult and lives away from home so I don’t think you have any right to see her pay slip. You of course have the option of not lending her any money.

weekfour · 24/07/2023 20:39

Payroller here. It would be highly unusual to get cash. However, she may have got a cheque which she could cash at a cash converter type place if she didn't want it to go through the bank.

Sorry you're dealing with this. I've seen people questioning why you're monitoring her account but money brings the worst out in lots of people.

Son would you say that's the only reason it would say cash on the pay slip

I worked with a payroll system years ago that said cash on the payslip for anyone with missing bank details. We didn’t actually pay in cash though, we waited for the correct details. So it could be possible.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 24/07/2023 21:24

My previous workplace the payslips all said cash because the alternative was cheque (old system). As we were all paid by standard bank transfer, that came under the heading of “cash”. Might be something similar here?

Decorhate · 24/07/2023 21:35

I also deal with payroll & yes people do give me the incorrect bank details from time to time & it bounces back. We would normally arrange for a separate bank transfer once we get the right details but that can take a few days to reach their bank account.

PADDY17 · 24/07/2023 22:03

Thanks everyone. She is saying that they won't be able to pay her until next payroll. She gets paid fortnightly

No. Not necessarily. It very much depends on the system in use and the way the organisation runs.

I would however think that if they had attempted to make a payment and it had bounced, the payslip would say BACS or bank transfer or something like that. My reasoning is that they wouldn't have known it would bounce when the payslip was produced.

Does that make sense?

Thank you very much. It kind of make sense yes.

I am really hoping it is just an error and we are just so panicked about everything that we are jumping to conclusions.

Sorry, just have one more question.

If it was a genuine error and she is not lying, should her company organsie paying her ASAP or does she have to wait until the next time she gets paid? LIke even if it was her that made the mistake. She is paid fortnightly? SHe works for a largish tech company with no payroll dept in her office if you get me. Everything is done online through a portal.
My gut is telling me that she prob did get paid and owed the money out or something.

It would be unusual to expect an employee to wait until the next payrun, but not impossible.

Tippingadvice · 28/07/2023 02:42

It is likely with being fortnightly paid that she will have to wait for the next payday.

Payroll is slightly more complex than people imagine. Normally pay is processed once in a pay period, this leads to a BACS payment which takes 3 days to appear in employees bank account. So if your daughter is paid fortnightly by the time she has realised the error and notified/entered the correct bank account info it is likely she is only a few days before the next payroll is processed.

For example Payday Friday 21 July, daughter spots error and on Monday 24th talks to payroll. Establish reason for error and on Wednesday 26th daughter notifies payroll of correct bank details. Payroll update info on Thursday 26th July. Payroll due to be processed Tuesday 1 August for payment on Friday 4th August.

PADDY17 · 28/07/2023 11:37

Thank you. She noticed the day ( wed 19th) before pay day( Thus 20th of July) that her bank details were incorrect ( or so she says) but at that stage the payroll had already been run. She still got a payslip but was told her pay will bounce back.
Next pay date is Aug 3rd
