Checking for emails on days off

DustyLee123 · 17/07/2023 21:34

We’ve been told that we must take our work computers home so that we can check our emails for work changes prior to the working day after out days off.
Is this acceptable ?
Id rather be contacted on my personal phone by text to be told changes. Getting the computer out and turning it on/off is a whole thing, plus I have to bring the laptop home and store it. That makes me responsible for it 24/7.

"2.24 Where the system is used prospectively an unforeseen change payment of £15 will be available. This will be used where it is necessary for employers to ask staff to change their shift within 24 hours of the scheduled work period. The payment is not applicable to shifts that staff agree to work as overtime, or that they swap with other staff members. It is not available, in any circumstances, in the retrospective system." Agenda for Change

Do you get your £15 if your shift is changed within 24 hours?

No, never heard of it

I’m not on the work WhatsApp group, set up by us staff - not management - as I was fed up from constant pings for pictures of people’s holidays and pets, then the comments following them.
‘When I’m not working I don’t want to hear about it !

Surely the answer to this is a rota WhatsApp group. It's only used for her to post rota changes. She changes the rota takes one picture uploads, you all see it

tbh, I would not accept this on my private phone AT ALL. If anyone tried to put me in such a group, I would block it.

Just refuse. It sounds like your colleagues are unhappy too and most people would be. Your manager is being unreasonable, this is not a normal workplace requirement.

Do you work for the nhs as a nurse? Our trust uses an app which you can request shifts and annual leave on. Also our roster policy is that rotas are completed 6 weeks in advance.

Some questions that are relevant, as opposed to outraged opinion that may sound excellent but don't do anything for you. Lots of people are happy to tell you "no way would they do this" but there is a huge difference between what keyboard warriors say and what they might do in real life, or what support the law gives to their opinions.

Who do you work for - not all nurses work in the NHS?
How long have you worked there?
Are you a member of a union?
Most nurses I know don't have work lap tops - what kind of work do you do?

What sort of rota changes are being advised?

TBH I check work email while on leave just in case something that matters is on there. So do colleagues; voluntary sector providing advice.

Previous career in the Civil Service I'd check email on Sunday eve as a matter of habit. People appointed to public bodies, and members of the public, don't follow office hours and forewarned is forearmed!!

Update - manager has asked me how I’d like to know about changes, I can only assume that she’s thought about what she said. I said a text to my personal phone. Result.
