Job searching graduates thread - counting down our notice!

NineToFiveish · 08/07/2023 14:27

This thread is for those of us who have survived the job hunt, signed our offer contract, and handed in our notice.

Now... we wait. Rather awkwardly, as it happens.

My notice is a whopping 3 months, so I have all summer to wind down my role. Everyone has been nice, but there's a slight gap between 'me' and 'them' now.

I have paperwork to complete for the new role, and as it's fully remote, they are sending me a lot of kit, including 2 monitors. I will need to rearrange my attic room to fit them in! I'm excited for the excuse to de-clutter my office dumping ground. 😁

Who else is here working their notice? Join me on the overplanning and overthinking couch!

Me!! Have name changed since the last thread. Got one more month. Lots to do before I finish and also write my handover notes.

PurpleGreenandWhiteAreTheNewPrimaryColours · 08/07/2023 18:21

Hi
Another member of the other thread who has name changed. My identity was potentially compromised so I can't say who I was but I was a regular.

NineToFiveish · 08/07/2023 18:49

Welcome, both!

My last day at work was Wednesday, I'm now taking leave until I start the new job in August. I am wracked with overthinking the whole scenario and have been a hot mess all week!

Had a catch up call with new boss and kept waiting for the other shoe to drop the whole time. By now, he's probably thinking I'm barking.

NineToFiveish · 09/07/2023 09:24

This changeover period is so nerve-wracking though! I really don't want to change jobs again any time soon - a decade or so, please, universe. I'm the main breadwinner of the family so feel extra pressure and fear that my salary won't get paid properly that first month, etc etc. 🥴 I've front-loaded my holiday for the year as well, so I'll actually be owing the business 2 days of my final salary before I start, which also happens to coincide with my mortgage renewal, so it all feels a bit nail-bitey.

I've been fantasising about being offered PILON which would ease a lot of my worries but that's beyond unlikely. 😆

What's worrying you most, @SupremeCommanderServalan ?

OP posts:
SupremeCommanderServalan · 09/07/2023 15:38

That I won't be able to do the job, that it will all be beyond me, that my line manager doesn't realise I am so bloody old and decrepit, etc @NineToFiveish. So all the usual self doubts and imposter syndrome!

I have been working for so long in a really toxic work environment, that I've been conditioned into being in fight or flight mode. I'm not sure I can remember how to be anything else.

NineToFiveish · 09/07/2023 17:39

I hear you. The unknown is scary, as well as change, even though logic tells us we must have shown aptitude, experience, and skill, or we wouldn't have been hired, etc.

I develop training, and a lot of my projects over the years have focused on induction training. It's a universally acknowledged truth that new people take at least six months to get to grips with a new role, and about 12 months to be considered fully competent. Nobody in their right mind expects a new joiner to be able to do everything right the first time.

It'll all feel overwhelming and strange for a while. You'll get there! I believe in you. 😊

I've been sent some the questions in advance of my next interview. Google tells me this should reduce my anxiety ha! Now I am absolutely terrified that there will be an expectation of perfect rehearsed answers. Envy <pukey face

Trisolaris · 10/07/2023 15:31

Oh hello!

2 weeks of notice left for me! Then 1 week off. Then start the new job.

Feeling so demotivated at work now, can’t wait to finish!

SafeAsAMouse · 10/07/2023 17:14

I’m hoping that my new job is not a bad move. I’m so bored in my current job but this new job isn’t a step up. Salary is the same which is annoying so wonder if I’ve sold myself short.

But it’ll give me more experience which is good and will hopefully mean I can step up in a few years. Also I’ll have some days in the office so I won’t be so lonesome.

NineToFiveish · 11/07/2023 09:30

Have you heard of the squiggly careers concept, @SafeAsAMouse ? Sideways moves in order to gain more experience can work really well.

I just saw this thread and thought it was a good resource for us here: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/_chat/4846281-new-job-making-a-good-impression-general-first-few-weeks-checklist

I have such a long notice period I'm worried I'll have forgotten everything and everyone before I start. I need to jot down my impressions of people I've met, and what I shared about myself with them in the interviews.

I'll be starting a new job soon. I've been with my current workplace for 8 years so it's been a while! Anything beyond common sense and tips/advice on...

Thanks @NineToFiveish I think I actually had heard of that ages ago when I was planning my career change. Which I then did. But I’d forgotten about squiggly careers.

I’m trying to get more experience within my new career but haven’t managed to step up to more money (and think I’ve fallen foul of the whole comparison thing and feel embarrassed about my salary). So thanks for reassuring me. I also think that wfh isn’t the best for learning within a new career as you miss out on all those conversations. So being in an office will be helpful.

NotBasically · 14/07/2023 19:48

Hello everyone, nice to be joining this thread 😊. I finally gave notice this week and am planning to start the new job in 2 weeks but when I spoke to the recruiter they said it all depends on the background checks so now I'm stressed thinking I gave notice too soon 🙈

SafeAsAMouse · 14/07/2023 20:01

Hope it all goes smoothly! I’m looking forward to my new job now after having a big wobble about it all.

NineToFiveish · 15/07/2023 18:03

This waiting period is its own kind of stress.

My DBS certificate came through the post today, and I've been asked to send proof of previous employment in the form of offer letters, p45, p60, payslips (salary info redacted), I've had to show them my passport on a video call as well as send pictures and residency proofs. It's not the MOD or anything, just a standard corporate position, but it feels like I'm being checked to get into spy training!

My current colleagues continue to be lovely as I share the news in various meetings/calls, I really enjoyed working with almost all of them. Just a shame the business itself doesn't value employees in the same way!

NotBasically · 19/07/2023 14:31

I'm starting next week 😬. What shall I wear? It's my first time in financial services.

NineToFiveish · 19/07/2023 15:01

Never worked in that field, but my default position is to go more formal than less formal. Whatever that means for you personally!

OP posts:
NotBasically · 19/07/2023 15:56

It has to be a fitted dress 😩

SafeAsAMouse · 19/07/2023 16:44

I’m gonna be wearing trousers and a shirt. Not into dresses.

Trisolaris · 19/07/2023 16:48

Im going back into financial services - my plan is

Suit trousers, blouse and smart jumper or suit jacket
Smart dress and jacket - Hobbs and similar is good for these

Definitely no heels or fitted dresses - far too uncomfortable!

NineToFiveish · 27/07/2023 10:02

How are we doing, graduates? Anyone started their new job yet? How's the induction and settling in going?

I have 8 more weeks left of my notice, give or take. And about 3 weeks of work, possibly less. 😬

I've got the summer holidays to juggle so I'm hoping I'll be able to phone it in over August, work as little as possible whilst appearing engaged and on top of things. This sounds so bad. I normally have a very strong work ethic, but a 3 month notice with no new projects on the horizon is mind numbing. I don't care about any of it, update calls, Q3 plans, etc. Meh.

One month's notice is plenty, I hope I am never in this position again (unless I'm getting paid 7 figures as a CEO and they want a year's notice, that is...hah)...

SupremeCommanderServalan · 27/07/2023 11:01

I'm on the annual leave end of my notice, due to start new job in August. Being on holiday is lovely, apart from the fact that as an overthinker, I have had some wobbles about not being able to do the new job, etc which I have inflicted on DH. (I suspect he is looking forwards to my start date...)

schroeder · 27/07/2023 13:06

Well despite being in the pit of despair a few weeks back. GrinBlushI am now waiting to start my new job in a couple of weeks!
No idea what to wear I have been wearing uniform for 25 years!

SafeAsAMouse · 27/07/2023 21:06

I’ve got three days left of work!

Trisolaris · 28/07/2023 09:50

I’m starting my new job on Monday and I have covid 😩

I emailed them yesterday to find out their policy and whether they still want me in if I’m testing positive but it’s not a great start!
