Will they overlook a typo?

I'm so pissed off, I've spent a long time this morning redoing my CV for my ideal job and submitted on indeed and I've just spotted a typo in my cover letter.
I wrote form instead of from.
If they're scanning many applications is it possible they will miss it or overlook?
I did proof read but I missed it myself.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about, typos happen all the time. It is obvious what you mean

Singleandproud · 08/07/2023 15:08

I spotted typos whilst sifting applications and was told to ignore them as typos happen and that is what spell checker is for (not available on our online application form).

chohiad · 08/07/2023 15:16

One typo I'm sure you'll be fine, we are encouraged to keep an open mind with typos, grammatical errors etc because of things like dyslexia.

Fooksticks · 08/07/2023 15:18

I never read cover letters. Tell me what I need to know in your CV.

Lots of recruiters don't read cover letters, fingers crossed you're ok!

itwasntmetho · 08/07/2023 15:49

Oh thank you, that makes me feel so much better.
The advert did say a CV and notes detailing why the job interests you.
I'm going to put it out of my mind now and if they call then it's a bonus.

My job requires accurate writing so typos are an issue for me when I sift.

But that won’t be the case for everyone - what’s the role?

That's ridiculous. Every job I've ever got has been swung by the cover letter. Maybe you should start reading them since people went to the effort of writing them, usually because the job advert specifically asked them to. It's utterly dickish to discard part of a job application like that and shows how your company values your prospective employees. And yes, "lots of recruiters" do read the cover letters otherwise why would they request them? They convey different info to a CV.

A typo like that wouldn’t really bother me. Misuse of apostrophes/poor spelling would be more of a problem.

Quveas · 08/07/2023 15:57

Honestly, don't think about it - they probably won't even notice it because when you are scanning applications your brain fills in what you expect to see most of the time anyway. If they do notice, it's minor (unless the job is possibly to be a proofreader!).

Reminds me of a typo that a collegaue made many years ago, typing up some notes from a structure review. The note should have read that the organisation was made up of "many disparate parts". Her rendering of it said that the organisation was made up of "many desperate parts". To this day, I am not sure that wasn't more accurate!

It's for a PA to a chartered accountant. My experience is a good match.
I haven't applied for a new job in years so at least it had me updating my CV, which I'll only be tweaking in minor ways for other vacancies.

My last CV said I have an eye for detail, I'm so glad I took that out.

I recruit often, and the only time i'm ever negative towards a typo is when there are mentions of attention to detail, especially multiple times.

In your case, and for that role, I'd be much more interested in the content of the cv than a small error in the cover letter.

Hugasauras · 08/07/2023 16:20

I work as an editor and have recruited other editors and one typo wouldn't bother me. Happens to us all, even editors!

Oh bog off.

I was a recruiter for 10 years mostly tech company and your CV should tell me what I need to know. If you have to write a cover letter addressing the key selection criteria, the recruiter doesn't know how to read your CV and you're basically doing their job for them.

itwasntmetho · 18/07/2023 11:12

Thank you all.
I do have an interview, so apparently they did overlook my typo!
I interview horribly so I'll be back tomorrow to ask if they'll overlook my terrible answers!

Good luck OP!

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 18/07/2023 11:22

Good luck OP! I once was sifting applications when a male applicant had described one of his previous roles as "mainly administrative work", however he had left out the i in mainly! I did think it was only fair to tell him!
