New job nerves-advice?

Hi all! Starting a new job on Tuesday and I'm really nervous. I have a bit of social anxiety at the best of times and I was in my last job for 5.5 years so understandably nervous about a new environment and colleagues.

Similar job (office admin) but in a completely new industry so a lot of learning which I don't mind.

Any advice on getting through the first day and making a good impression?!

Congratulations OP!. I would say be kind to yourself, dont expect to know everything in week 1. Ask questions if you arent sure, take a notepad/pen to write down key contacts, passwords (secretly of course!), door codes etc. Can you buy lunch somewhere, if not take some food with you - and paracetamol incase of first day stress headache.
Remember they employed you as they consider you to be the best fit for their company and the role. Enjoy yourself.

@Ilikewinter thanks! That's what I keep telling myself, that they employed me and I got offered the job only a few hours after my interview. I feel I have imposter syndrome and I'm going to mess up somewhere 😂 hopefully not! 🤞🏻

I have a new starter joining me next week and I am so nervous about making their first day go well. Hopefully your new Manager is feeling the same... Congratulations by the way Star

Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they feel silly. I'm almost hoping my new colleague will ask me why we do things the way we do it because sometimes we can get in a rut and ignore simple solutions or better practices. I might regret this thought when I'm asked why I do something so silly and backwards...

You will be absolutely fine, give yourself some grace. It will probably be really tiring mentally and physically just trying to take it all in, whilst feeling the nerves. Let us know how it goes!

Ps on a totally selfish level, I'm now hijacking to ask:

What would make you feel at ease on your first day?

(Sorry... Blush)

Daniki · 05/07/2023 22:54

@oksirnowmoveon I think just friendliness, it's great to meet someone who is friendly and warm rather than overly strict? Helps to relax I think! Hard to know what exactly would help me, it's been so long since iv a started a new job 😂

I will start a new job next week as well. I already felt nervous when I think about it.
Just left a very toxic environment & nasty boss in my last job (only been there for 7-8weeks). I am a bit worried about my new boss & team..I have never felt this in my previous job before last, I have been there for 7years, always felt ok to settle once I have been trained properly.

Can you make a good impression on day 1 unsure you can.

It as was the second day remote before people thought about each other (and that included a drop in session prior to first official start date)

people can be full of smiles but how helpful if is if you know you suffer from stressing out later down the line etc - don’t be something you are not as that makes you feel worse.

In my option start dates are never a breeze, unless you know the manager. Being honest may be the only saver. Personally I found it easiest to rely on my own personal patient experience rather than any previous job. I’m sure
