Expected to come into work in summer holidays

Been working at a school part time for a few month, haven't seen my contract yet as it's not come through. I have been told unofficially, by staff members that we need to come in work in the summer for so many days. As the head never schedules development days throughout the school year. The two weeks school is open, I will not manage to get childcare for. I am aware that school staff (I am not a teacher) have extra days etc and I am more than willing to participate, but do you think I would AIBU to say I haven't arranged childcare for those weeks and wasn't aware it was expected? Can I also add it's not in any other staff member's contact, it reads something like term time only + 3 development days throughout the school year. So I am guessing mine would be the same. All training has been done in my own time online, whilst I have been working here.

It seems a bit weird you’ve been working there for a couple of months but haven’t seen your contract yet. I would ask for to see it asap.

Are you paid for those 2 weeks?

Ive worked in schools and have always been expected to work a few days within the school holidays for training, setting up the classroom etc.

Did you take a term time only contract?

I worked in admin in a school yonks ago on a full time basis and we had to come in every day during the holidays.

I've asked about my contract apparently it's normal for our council to take their time with it, I'm term time only, but also part time there is one day I have done which would count as one of my development days. As it was a full day and I'm pt. I just find it odd this wasn't mentioned at interview etc and on the job advertisement it said development days throughout school year which would normally be one in sep 2 at the end of summer etc. from what other staff members have said the head never books our development days and just says come in school throughout summer.

I work in a school term time only. However I have to work 12 days in the holidays through out the year. Maybe because your new you still need to do a couple as its pro rata.

Some roles and schools are more rigid about when you do the days. In my school I can do them whenever I want

It's a bit of a pain but you get loads done because there's no kids or teachers to interrupt you

Most people I know in schools have to work some days in the holidays. I can't fathom what your council is thinking because the written statement of main particulars (kind of what you are calling a contract, but isn't) has to be provided by the first day in law - https://www.gov.uk/employment-contracts-and-conditions/written-statement-of-employment-particulars

To be honest, this should have been mentioned, but I doubt you will get very far saying that you can't attend due to childcare issues. You need to stop hearing about it "unoffically" and ask whoever your manager is what the expectation is.

Employment contracts

A contract is an agreement between employee and employer setting out implied and explicit terms and conditions - written statement of particulars, collective agreements
