Which job would you choose?

I have the possibility of doing two jobs, and I can’t decide which route to take. I feel like I’m at a bit of a crossroads!

1 - very interesting, important area of work. Lateral move (no promotion), managing 5 people. I’m more comfortable with the subject matter. However, less good work life balance (likely to be called out of hours, have to work in office).

2 - less interesting, but a promotion. More money. Managing 4 people. Better work life balance (some wfh) and potential future opportunities working in industry. Don’t know this area but would be given full training.

On paper I feel like I should go for 2, however I’m worried about doing something that isn’t my ‘passion’…

WWYD? For info I have a young family.

With a young family I’d go for 2.

whiteroseredrose · 02/07/2023 06:57

I'd go for 2 as well. I didn't like my job encroaching on family time.

Willmafrockfit · 02/07/2023 07:10

can you negotiate for 1

Saythreehailmarys · 02/07/2023 07:16

Thanks for your replies so far!

@Willmafrockfit no room to negotiate at all for 1 🙁

2 if u have a young family. I speak.as someone who is child free and does job 1, but without the big bucks. Exhausting

Sycamorethanever · 02/07/2023 07:19

def 1. Would a man take option 2?

follow your heart.

Willmafrockfit · 02/07/2023 07:49

have you plenty of childcare?
supportive family?

parietal · 02/07/2023 08:27

If you go for 2, would that rule out moving back towards the area you are passionate about in, say, 5 years time? I bet it wouldn't. Careers can be very non linear and if something is your passion you can store up knowledge and come back with more skills.

Go for 2 now but keep in touch with area 1 for the long term.

Of course a man would go for a promotion and more pay!

2 looks like a no brainer to me.

I meant more would he worry about the WFH option and having young children in his career option choice

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 02/07/2023 11:34

I'd take 2 for the flexibility, increased salary and opportunities.

LadyLolaRuben · 02/07/2023 13:49

Option 2. No brained. Good luck

LadyLolaRuben · 02/07/2023 13:50

"Brainer" supposed to say

Saythreehailmarys · 02/07/2023 15:04

Thanks so much everyone really value your thoughts - sounds like 2 is the obvious choice!

Nope don’t have any help or family nearby, and paying a fortune in nursery. So every penny helps.

@parietal this is such a good point, thank you. You’re right, I’m unlikely to completely close off that avenue forever. I think it’s just that the more interesting/fun jobs tend to be at the lower grades, whereas if I moved back it would be in a senior managerial role. But I have to grow up at some point lol

DH did! Decided that seeing his DC grow up was very important to him.

ItsNotWhatItsNot · 02/07/2023 16:52

I would not work in an office at all, so wfh and more money? No brainer-2.
