Salary paid late

Hey, has anyone got experience of not being paid on time? I’m due to get paid last working day of the month (contract says on or around last working day). Salaries were held up yesterday and they got posted/credited at about 12:30am this morning. Still no sign of money in my account.

Will it not appear till Monday? I’m so gutted and feel let down as Ive recently taken a new full time job working and going into the weekend skint and dreading bills coming out on Monday. I work for a start up/scale up company. Thanks x

If the contract says 'on or around' then that's really ambiguous. How are salaries credited? If it's by BACS it could take up to 3 days (but it shouldn't take that long)
Ring your bank and check if you have a pending payment.

Happens frequently in my industry (childcare). So common that I don't expect payment until sometime during first week of the month.

Raise it with your employer. Not sure anything can be done until grievance has been raised, time has been given to resolve.

On or around in the contract covers it

Cocomaymay · 01/07/2023 08:11

Thanks all, yeah the contract wording is vague. I called the bank and they said they can’t see any incoming transactions till they hit the bank. Also that if it’s faster payment it should be processed within a couple of hours and it doesn’t matter if it’s the weekend.

I previously worked for a big corporate company who always paid on time at about 2am so this has been a bit of a shock to the system. It was 5pm the last few months but really late in the day this month. It got me worried about cash flow issues but maybe I’m overthinking it xx

This happened once with a previous employer and they offered to cover any costs incurred from the delay. However, they didn’t have “or around” in the contract.

Cocomaymay · 01/07/2023 09:31

@chocolateisavegetable thanks for replying and that’s reassuring to hear a previous employer offered to help with that. Just re-read the contract and it says “on or around the last day of the month” so I suppose they could argue it is “around” the last day. Just a bit gutting xx

I would ring your bank on Monday if the payment hasn't arrived, and ask that they honour the direct debits due out via a temporary OD. That'll be cheaper than the DDs bouncing and the ensuing charges.
For future months, I would contact everyone you have a direct debit at the start of the month and say your new company is paying you a few days later and ask the payment date be moved 2 weeks on.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to work for a company that can’t pay staff on time. I’d start looking for another job

TakeMyStrongHand · 01/07/2023 10:06

Is it an easy job to replace?

I'd be looking elsewhere. Money is the best way to show an employee you value their work and I can't think of an emergency that would make me accept payroll and HR not doing it on time. I can understand the contract wording to be safe, although it would irk me that they felt the need. If it happened more than once I'd be complaining and leaving.

We need to remember that the employer is as replaceable to us as we are to them!

mrsbyers · 01/07/2023 10:09

I would move your direct debits back a few days if you stay there to avoid this happening again

Oblomov23 · 01/07/2023 10:26

I have this regularly. My Dh is furious.

Current job...we get paid somewhere between the first and fifth working day and it drives me bonkers. Really struggle with cash flow and paying bills. Hence why after two years I'm leaving. Too stressful
