Indecisive about job offers - which would you choose ?

Hello , sorry for the waffle !

I’m currently working in a role which I hate! (NHS)

I have been offered 2 positions in dentistry within the last week and I’m not sure which to pick.

One of them is the standard 9-5 - minimum wage

The other is 12-8pm - just above minimum wage.

Im not sure why I’m so overwhelmed, but would appreciate any advice. I’m quite a timid person and I think the thought of joining another new company after the experience I’ve had in the position I’m in now really scares me.

Also maybe the thought of maybe finishing at 8pm in the winter..

thanks in advance

Are the roles the same otherwise? Do either of them offer progression? So the hours fit with your life? How far away are they?

I would go for the higher paid job - a lie in every day is appealing.
Why the worry about winter evenings? It's dark at 5pm in most places.

Congratulations on getting two job offers and whichever you opt for, I hope you'll feel happy and fulfilled.

Pick the one with the nicest people. If there is little difference in the pay, work with the best people you can.

What would suit you best? For 12-8 the traffic would be better and you could get stuff done in the morning. I used to do that shift and they were quite handy but I only did a couple a week. Don't know if finishing at 8pm every day of the week is so appealing?
9-5 can be a pain as well as can take up the whole day depending on travel times.

one of them is a big company with different practices around London (but that isn’t always a good thing )

The other has a sister practice , which means potentially working there sometimes. In terms of growth the second sounds more appealing as the practice is also expanding but again I think the 8pm finish scares me a little (not sure why)

Hello, yes ! i think it’s the thought of finishing at 8:00 in the winter that puts me off a little . But again where I can be quite timid and anxious I might just be over thinking with fear attached. 😥

Thank you !

my thoughts exactly on the 12pm start , it’ll give me some flexibility to do what I need before starting work

As pp says, it's dark at 5pm in winter anyway. What about that worries you? Or is it just the unknown?

The second one sounds like the better offer based on what you've said though. Don't forget it's just a job, you're not signing your soul away - you can move on to something else in 6/12/24 months if it's not for you.

This put my mind to rest . I really do think it’s the fear of the unknown, I’ll be taking public transport but where I work so quite busy (on a high street, bars/restaurants) and is also next to a bus station.

That gives me some comfort in my commute home

Are you a morning person or a night owl? Asking because I'm a morning person- I used to do 12-8 shifts and would literally get home, eat and go straight to bed. It didn't work with my life. 8 is pretty much my bedtime these days! If this doesn't apply to you (and your body clock is more normal than mine), then I'd say go with that one.
