When do I tell prospective employers I was let go from my previous role?

Just that really. It was a case of last in, first out, but there's no way to make that sound good is there?

Today I have a speculative call ahead of a possible interview, and then an actual interview. Actual interview was planned before I was given my notice, so I don't know how to bring that up, and as for speculative call, it's not a good opener is it?

How have others dealt with this?

“The company priorities are changing, which I thought would impact and change my role to something different to what I joined to do, so it feels like a good time to start speaking to other companies”

What do you mean let go. Do you mean fired or made redundant?

OhBling · 28/06/2023 09:29

Personally, I don't think there's any shame in being made redundant. It is a perfectly normal and regular thing to happen. So, when asked why you left you can say, "I enjoyed the job but unfortunately, the company was in a position it had to make costs via a redundancy programme and I was one of the people impacted."

I don’t think it sounds bad at all to say this is what happened. Confused

People aren't made redundant.

Jobs are made redundant. Your job was no longer required by the business and there was no suitable role to move you to, so you were let go.

It feels personal, but it really isn't. You have nothing to feel ashamed or embarrassed about.

I was honest and told the interviewer that due to covid the business structure had changed and since I was last in I was first out the door.

Yarnysaura · 28/06/2023 10:46

You just say the company were making cutbacks and your job was redundant. It's completely fine and no judgement on you.

Don’t say that - it sounds like bullshit (sorry), so they’ll assume you’ve been fired for some issue with you

There’s nothing wrong at all with being made redundant, just tell them that.

Rainbowshit · 28/06/2023 11:28

You need to be honest here. Being lay in first out is perfectly fine and nothing to be ashamed of.

Ariela · 28/06/2023 13:42

As you'd arranged the interview before being given notice, I'd simply say that you'd noticed changes were being made and felt being last in you might be first to go, which is why you'd started looking and was pleased to find this opportunity to apply for because... (reason it's be right up your street)

Don't say that, unless you want to sound like a proper knob!

What do you mean by let go? You can't be ambiguous if you want advice
