Remote work for an ex-teacher

Teddering3 · 28/06/2023 01:01

Due to an unexpected change in circumstances I am looking to find a job that is 100% online. I'm looking for an entry-level position but I don't really even have a field in mind. I studied languages and I am a qualified teacher with more than 10 years experience working in primary schools, but I am now ready to get out of teaching. My other qualifications are in sports coaching so probably not very relevant to an online job. I feel like teaching has given me quite a few transferable skills but I have never worked in a different industry and I don't really know where to start. It's all a bit of a shock at the moment so I'm just trying to research options. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions or insight into what working remotely would be like.

Online tutoring
TEFL
Home based call centre
Data entry
Telephone marketing

Working from home can be great if you have a good social network and can get out and about a bit too. If not, it can be very isolating and a bit depressing. It also depends on the kind of person you are. I don't mind a hybrid model. I love having days where I can forget about dressing for work and the commute, but I also really value face to face time with my colleagues..I tend to be more creative and buzzy when I'm with other people.

Education is not an ‘Industry’

SequinsandStilettos · 28/06/2023 05:34

Pedantic Wink OP means "sector" and certainly, I'm very industrious at work!
You will see many online tutoring opportunities advertised OP but that's still teaching. Customer service call centre role or data input if you have the bandwidth, computer equipment etc at home.

Literally the OP didn't ask about whether or not people think remote working is good or bad. I assume the OP has thought this through and based on the circumstances mentioned in the opening post, is confident about the choice to work 100% remotely.

Content writing for websites.

My child attends online school if teaching online would be an option.

@BodegaSushi

Except literally the OP said, "or insight into what working remotely would be like".

Check out 'The Teacher Project' on Facebook. They offer business coaching packages for teachers who want to leave the classroom and work 100% online. I know someone who did it and they now earn far more than their teacher salary and can teach the way they want, have less stress, can choose their hours etc. Could be worth a look anyway!

warmmfeet · 28/06/2023 18:22

@Eyeofthestorm7 why do universities charge such massive fees then

emmylousings · 28/06/2023 18:33

See Facebook group 'exit teaching and survive' , lots of ideas on there.

Teddering3 · 28/06/2023 21:00

Thank you for all of the helpful suggestions. I don't really have any choice about remote work, but I would like to go into it with my eyes open.

@warmmfeet I can't find "The Teacher Project" on Facebook. Is it still active do you know?

Education is not an ‘Industry’

Education is absolutely an industry, especially if you include the private sector.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 28/06/2023 21:08

Twinkl offer remote work creating resources. I did it for a few months. They are a lovely bunch and it was incredibly flexible. Downside was that the pay was rubbish - about £10 per hour.

Education is not an ‘Industry’

It has become (possibly always has been) a production line with all the trappings, more paperwork and management bullshit than most industries.

Wapplesnaff · 28/06/2023 21:20

I currently work from home (6 months) after leaving education, recommended by an old colleague. I'm in a team that has 4 ex-teachers. The company are currently recruiting - I wouldn't want to post the link directly, but I could PM the website if you wanted to look into it.

warmmfeet · 28/06/2023 23:05

@Teddering3 I've just had a look and can't see it but if you search for Elliot Philips on Facebook he is the guy who started the company and there is lots of info on his page.

Good luck with it all 😊

Aria20 · 30/06/2023 09:13

@Wapplesnaff what type of work is it you are doing?

Teddering3 · 30/06/2023 10:44

@Wapplesnaff I messaged you to find out a little bit more about your job.

Hello is there any jobs at the moment ?

BastardsWant2PutUpMyPremiums · 27/08/2024 16:03

@sv96 You might be best PM-ing on a zombie thread. Indeed (job application company) always sends me jobs for "online tutors" - you just need to put "work from home" jobs in your settings. Some supply agencies also offer online tutoring now (I suspect some of it is for students at home who are meant to have an education but are being let down by the LA).

Check out The Teacher Project on Facebook - coaching programs for tutors wanting to set up their own online tutoring businesses
