Have had a job offer via a recruitment consultant today. The role itself sounds great and offers better career progression than current role but have been offered just £500 more than current salary which hit a bit of a bum note. I'm expected to negotiate but I've no idea what is reasonable. No salary range was advertised for the role. I've been with current company for over 20 years so feel like I also have to factor the loss of that security in too.

I'm currently on £60k+ and as the role is offering more responsibility I'd had in my head around £70k before being told the money bit, so the low offer was a bit of a shock. It's quite a niche role so difficult to benchmark. What sort of % is reasonable to negotiate?

I would expect 10% more than your current salary. Assume things like pension contributions are similar as that can make a notable difference.

Go back and say exactly what you've said here. "I'm currently on £60k+ and as the role is offering more responsibility I was expecting around £70k. "

An extra £500 per year? So £41/month before tax? They're having a laugh. Unless there are considerable other benefits?

I would not move jobs for a £500 salary increase. If you were thinking of £70k, tell them that is what you were thinking.

Recruitment consultant sounds rubbish. He should have covered this off with you before sending over - assuming you have been clear about your salary expectations.

Also, negotiation is not done like this anymore. It leaves everyone with a sour taste in their mouth. Really old fashioned to give you a figure and then expect you to come back and negotiate for more. Make the agent do this for you.

I agree go for 10%.
