KIT and mat pay

does anyone know how it works with keeping in touch days and maternity pay? I’m an NHS employee so I get a combination of occupational and statutory maternity pay. Thanks in advance

You would get them paid at your normal rate. You can do up to 10, and they are paid a month in arrears. I've done 3 in June and will get them in my July pay.

Thank you. Will it reduce your maternity pay?

I think it is offset against your smp and omp.

MissJam · 25/06/2023 19:57

I’m about to do my first one tomorrow. As far as I know, maternity pay isn’t affected unless you do more than 10 KIT days

Dinosaurdrip · 26/06/2023 09:51

Staff should be paid at their basic day hourly rate (minus any occupational or statutory maternity payments) for KIT days.

The above is what I came across when googling on uhb.nhs

Stat maternity pay comes in weekly amounts - if you worked one KIT day, the pay will be offset by one WEEK of mat pay so you are best to have this clarified before you agree to work any, or work then during the unpaid weeks.
I was stung by this as our trust policy was so vague - it has been rewritten as a result of my grievance.

ScottishBeth · 26/06/2023 20:51

Our trust policy says that you will be paid for KIT days, but won't get any more than your normal pay. So they advise not doing KIT days till the latter part of your leave.

MissJam · 27/06/2023 06:57

@Toytransportemergency hmmm this is concerning. I did 3 hours yesterday. I’ve read over the KIT information I received before going off - which is also vague. I think I’ll hold off on anymore until I see next months pay. Mine is being ‘split’ over 12 months so I’ve always got a reasonable wage however if it wasn’t for the pay rise it would have been quite low compared to the previous 8 months.

Might be worth speaking to your manager OP to clarify what happens on KIT days re pay.

Whentwobecomesthree · 27/06/2023 07:38

Kit days are offset. So if you are receiving enhanced maternity pay don't use a kit day during that period. If you are receiving SMP you will receive the difference between your SMP day rate and your normal day rate. If you are in the final few months where you are getting no pay then you will receive the fulll normal day rate. This is why most employers tell you to use your kit days in the parts of your mat leave when you are receiving no pay, definitely not when you are receiving full pay.

Toytransportemergency · 27/06/2023 08:17

@Whentwobecomesthree in the NHS it’s offset against weekly SMP. It’s rubbish

toomuchlaundry · 27/06/2023 08:26

@Toytransportemergency I assume that is standard. NHS maternity pay is quite generous, not every organisation offers enhanced maternity pay

juneybean · 27/06/2023 08:28

Where I work you get your normal hourly rate and smp is unaffected, but its not the NHS its private sector.

wingingit1987 · 27/06/2023 13:34

Thanks everyone. I will use during my unpaid leave to be on the safe side.

It’s what all employers do.

Toytransportemergency · 28/06/2023 18:42

@Tippingadvice its optional for most employers. NHS pay is set by law so individual boards can’t change their own terms. SIL’s company didn’t offset any of it

Tippingadvice · 28/06/2023 19:36

@Toytransportemergency ok it’s what CS do and I suspect all public sector as it’s would be seen as a double payment.

Toytransportemergency · 28/06/2023 21:33

@Tippingadvice i agree but the weekly thing caught me off guard. I assumed one day wages would forfeit one day of SNP. HR and my manager agreed with me due to the wording of our policy, but the payments were set in law so boo shucks to me.
