How many times have you been made redundant?

I have an eternal fear of being made redundant. I was made redundant when I was 26 and one of the most stressful things to have ever happened to me, and knocked my confidence massively.

I have a feeling it may happen again in my current role and I just can't go through it again. I'm only in my early 30s, so god knows how many times I'll face it in my working life.

I'm genuinely interested, in what way do you mean the economy is 'really good at the moment'?

There's never been a better time to find a well paid job
2007 was waves of repossessions, gig economy jobs, redundancies
Today is a lot different

I agree 2007 was very bad in lots of ways....but a new better paid job in 2023 would have to be significantly better paid to out run the crazy inflation we are currently 'enjoying'. The impact on mortgages and rent is terrifying not to mention food and the other household bills.

I actually think the market now (finance) is really tough. I used to get calls all the time about roles but hardly anything these days. All my agents say its been a tough year. You just have to look at alternatives with job hunting and hope that this passes

I got made redundant in 2009 and it was awful - I was at the stage in my career where most places could fill my level from their internal trainees, plus was in an area decimated at the time (commercial property) so noone was hiring - I spent 6 months applying to pretty much anywhere I could and didn't get a single interview. In the end, I never went back into that industry.

Twice!

Once. I don't really understand the feelings posters have. Of course it's not pleasant, but you just apply for other jobs. It's just one part of life we all (nearly all of us, most of us )have to deal with.

Twice.

1st time did the whole put at risk, long winded consultations etc. Been in post 12 years. I took 6 months and was exhausting.

2nd time. Was told rolle had been made redundant as no funding. Work out the month. Been in post 4 years.

Much preferred the brutal, quick approach the second time as I knew where I was at.

three times by fag ends.

16th July 99 - fag ends paid 1 week

January 2007 - fag ends paid a week plus hotel food to ease their conscious

30th Sept 2013 - fag ends - no embarrassment at letting Someone go.

Fag ends = you are the lowest in society

The joy of the IT industry, lots of take overs and mergers. I think it's 5 but that's over 38 years.

I always work on having 12 months salary in reserve and have never taken longer than 6 months to find another suitable full time job.

I'll retire when the current job ends so I don't worry about it any more.

Once. I was on maternity leave at the time, so they still had to pay me until the end of that. Found a new job that started at the end of my ML, but it was stressful.

I was informed I was at risk of redundancy last year (end of a contract) but had already decided to jump ship for a better job. I did wonder whether I should hang around for the potential payout, but the opportunity was too good to miss.
