Fixed term contract question

Hi I applied for a new job within the public sector (i already work in there but in a different department) about a month ago...due to funding I was only offered a 1 year fixed term contract which I accepted as it was a brilliant job (I can't be seconded into the new job as I'm already on secondment). Due to various reasons I haven't yet handed in my notice with my current department but was planning on doing it next week...I have to give 1 month notice.
Issue is, I've noticed that the exact same job is being advertised again as they have found extra funding so can afford to take on additional person...this job though is being advertised as a 2 year ftc not 1 year like mine. Feel a bit peed off that I could be doing the same job as someone else who has an extra year added to their contract. Any advice on how to approach this?

Ask them? Or ask the person who offered you the job? Otherwise I would be inclined to retract my acceptance and then apply for the other position. Good luck Smile

Thanks for this..good idea. I did wonder if I could automatically be considered for the 2 year job as it was less than 6 months since I had the job interview

How annoying!! Knowing public sector they'll prob struggle to have the obvious flexibility to offer you the longer contract straight away. But, just msg the recruitment team/ line manager and say 'seen my new role up for 2 years, this is a great job I'd love to have a longer contract- would you consider putting me on the longer contract?'

There'll be zero negative repercussions for expressing interest in staying longer so don't worry about asking -I just have a horrible feeling they'll be ridiculous and say you'd have to apply fresh because of 'the system'. Hopefully not though!

Best of luck!

Thank you..it was so frustrating to see the extra year added to the new job advert, especially when I was told mine was just 1 year due to lack of funding!!

Sorry just wanted to add that I'm 33 and bought a house on my own about a year ago so an extra year's work would be invaluable.

@Gogogirlgirl if having talked to the recruitment team/HR they won’t extend your FTA, apply for the 2 year FTA, I know it sounds bonkers but you can do that.

Thank you, I suspect that's what I'll end up doing
