Probation extended

Can anyone advise pls? My SIL is 5 months into her 6 month probation in NHS HCA post. There have been no formal issues but she has a niggling suspicion they are going to extend her probation when she has her final probationary review meeting. As far as I understand there has been nothing formally logged at her 30, 60 and 90 day meeting to suggest she is under performing but is under a great deal of pressure on the ward she has joined so gets several duties thrown at her which she is simply not able to do yet (and has flagged this with no support?). Any advice out there? Can they leave it till her 6 month probation has ended and tell her they are extending it and/or would she have been obliged to have physically seen something in writing at this stage?
Thanks, (writing on her behalf as her Internet has gone down!)

Probationary periods do not have a meaning in law, so there are no rules about what an employer should to or are obliged to do.

Up to the point of 2 years, it is all irrelevant. There is next to no employment protection. That is why probation largely has no meaning. But until something happens there is no real point in her worrying. If she needs longer to pass, they should tell her where improvements are required and provide support for her to meet them.

A good employer will require managers to raise performance issues promptly. It is unlikely that probation will be extended if no issues have been raised by the 5 month stage.

It can happen if the manager is poor, the first step is to get the probation policy and check the manager has followed that.

What makes her think she’ll have her probation extended rather than an outright dismissal?
