UK jobs - Lebanese citizen

I'm trying to help a friend find job opportunities in the UK - this friend lives in Lebanon and has a Lebanese passport

Seems so difficult! Unless you are a skilled worker (teacher, doctor etc) any other opportunities seem pretty non existent in terms of visa sponsorship.

Any advice?

Anyone been through this and secured a job on a Lebanese passport?

Thanks

Yes she needs a skill - one of these. Then she needs to get a job offer and apply for a Visa.

Thank you :)

The thing I can't understand is that even if you fit one of those categories - when you Job search, hardly any say they offer visa sponsorship. Most say you must have right to work in the UK which seems to limit it to UK residents - unless its on you to pay for the visa etc when (and if) you get an offer?

It's very difficult unless they are highly skilled and I think it's become harder in recent years. One Lebanese friend worked as a waiter and got one of the big Lebanese restaurants in London to sponsor him. He now has British citizenship. I don't know how my other friend came over, it was a long time me ago, but he set up as a tradesman. However, eventually his visa wasn't renewed and he's back in Lebanon.

All the other Lebanese I have known here either came over for university, had very good qualifications or family/a strong network here already.

Not very helpful, I know...

Thank you - that is honestly so helpful. Kind of confirms what I had assumed/figured out so far. It's so tricky!

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply x

What skills does your friend have? Whilst not Lebanese I know someone who taught themselves how to do tech, got a remote job for a British tech company, then after a while they have sponsored her to move to the UK as a skilled migrant.

So look at skills, then the list of companies accredited to sponsor high skilled migrants in that area.

Interesting!

Skills in two areas - sports coaching and management (has previously played for national team and coached teams). Also ran kids sports clubs in UAE for a while.

Also does web and app design on the side

But no formal teaching qualifications or degree unfortunately :(

Start teaching agency sports teaching in a city. My husband got a visa starting with agency unqualified teaching, then Overseas teacher training, work visas until indefinite leave.

It's supposed to be difficult. Our doors are closed. We are a racist country of immigrant haters. Haven't you heard of Brexit? Anti -immigration sentiments were a massive contributor to Brexit.

thinkfast · 15/06/2023 17:05

Ps heaven knows why anyone would want to come here

CharlotteRumpling · 15/06/2023 17:06

because Lebanon is worse?

It's very hard. Employers becoming increasingly reluctant to sponsor.

ThatFraggle · 15/06/2023 17:07

People can't even join their British spouses. Despite what the Daily Mail tells you, it's not easy to get in.

Rollercoaster1920 · 15/06/2023 22:26

Web app coding is what my friend does. I'm not sure of the niche though.

The reason most jobs arent open to visa applicants, is that organisations have to be official sponsors, which costs them money, so it's only the minority of employers who struggle to recruit who need to bother.
