A work one … please read and give opinions

i returned to uni to study nursing mental health - going into my second year fell pregnant so suspended my second year. Whilst of I have toyed with the idea of following a different route to get me where I think I would like to work - within a school helping children like a wellbeing officer.

applied for my second year student finance - was rejected for the childcare element and said I would need to claim via universal credit - they said no student finance should have accepted as your not employed so we wouldn’t do the childcare element - we get a few hundred towards living costs. Then I find out I won’t get awarded my NHS bursary either as uni messed up and forgot (some excuse) to take me of as an active student and was down as attending all second year so the NHS bursary won’t pay me for second year as to them Iv done second year. Uni are useless when it comes to finance stuff - took them 7 months after suspended to declare that.
So basically I have to give up uni because there’s no box for a mum who is at uni unless I use the little maintenance I get which would leave me in the red covering just nursery fees.

sooo I now need a job - what would you do? Continue to follow the original plan or start a new career and fresh, reinvent, etc etc … if you had a do over ?

im conflicted if I should be following my well-being goal or not . I love staying at home with my baby but financially I just can’t.

just need some opinions about if you were in this situation what would you do

Why can't uni declare their mistake and remove the record of your second year so that you can get the bursary?

They said they will look into it but the nhs bursary people said it would be a long process to adjust the records as it should have been declared. I would be due to go back in September and the nursery place is from September when I return , I just don’t think I can take the risk of not being able to pay the nursery and get myself more in debt :(

Don't you want to at least chase the uni up to get the records fixed?

Send a joint email to Uni and NHS Bursary people, and copy to their retrospective Data Protection Officers ( their emails would be easy to find).

Point out that under GDPR they are legally required to maintain accurate records. Where records are incorrect they are legally required to rectify them.

Confirm that you did not complete year 2 and your records with Uni and NHS Bursary scheme are incorrect and need to be rectified within one month. If they are not rectified you will refer them to ICO.

Advise them that you are entitled to the year 2 NHS Bursary including Childcare element. You are currently being denied your right to funding because you deferred a year due to pregnancy and maternity leave. This is treating you less favourable than other students and constitutes discrimination under the Equality Act protected characteristic of maternity and pregnancy. You therefore wish to lodge a complaint of discrimination, please could they advise how to do this.

If you really want to go for it, ask who received your bursary for the year you deferred as you did not receive it. If the records show you have received it then please would they investigate as there is potential that someone else committed fraud and received your bursary.

Talk to Pregnant Then Screwed as they will help you.
