How long in can you ask for promotion or pay rise?

When you're delivering well in all aspects of a role and enthusiastic to do more with lots of examples as to how you will... how long into a job should you wait until asking for a rise or promotion?

This isn't meant to sound entitled or coming with much expectation, genuinely would like to know.

How long have you been there? On what basis were you recruited?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 07/06/2023 13:58

Once you are comfortably out of probation, usually 6 months in my experience.

Overthebow · 07/06/2023 14:01

I’d say a year to be able to show that you really are doing well at all aspects, and give time to get involved in stretch projects or activities to show you can work at the next level. Anything less than a year I don’t think would give enough time for consistency.

HelloSunshine12 · 07/06/2023 14:03

I'd say a year, and to have clear examples of how you've made an impact.

I'd say if you don't get a payrise after you have completed at least a year, then ask for one the following year. Most firms usually do payrises for everyone at the same time annually rather than on an individual basis based on starting date, so find out when their annual review is, and ask beforehand.

At my company, raises only happen during the official annual review process.

SquashPenguin · 07/06/2023 14:23

I’d say about a year, and have examples of why you deserve the pay rise.

OakElmAsh · 07/06/2023 14:42

a year would be the minimum, but do be aware of pay cycles etc - bigger places can be tied to annual windows. Now if your year anniversay comes just after a pay cycle, you could raise it during that process, so that you're not stuck till the following year. but definitely don't ask before the 6-9 month mark in this case

My probation was a year (standard for my role) and I can’t apply for promotion while on probation. My role was confirmed in January and I will be applying in the next promotion round this December.

Everywhere I have worked has an annual review and promotions process at a set time each year. I have never asked for an off cycle promotion or pay rise, I negotiate upon joining and then annually.

Thanks for input everyone.

I had the 6-month review (late at 8 months) and line manager said -without me asking - that I've mastered the current role and that he's "recommending me for a promotion and pay rise" - but needs to check it out with rest of leadership and will confirm in the next few weeks.

The cynical side of me says this may not actually happen and is being dangled at me, possibly as a few people left the company recently and they need to retain.

But that sounds very unhealthy management practice and maybe my tendency to paranoid thinking.
