I would imagion it would be OK, but you're whole earings with her would be at 22% (BR) tax code as i'm asusming you're tax allowance code (474L) will be in your main job. you would have to pay the NI thou in the normal fashion, I think ti would be on a class A but soemone might well be able to clarify that one.

Albosmum - You are still employed by your main employer, so this is the same as if you wanted to take (for example) a bar job in the evening. Check your contract, most companies have a clause which requires you to get permission in advance for secondary employment, this is to make sure you don't have a conflict of interest, eg working for a commercial rival.

Speak to your HR Dept, see what they say.

thank you - will talk to my employer - dont think their will be a conflict as I work in education

I did pt work while I was on unpaid mat leave 3.5 yrs ago. My normal contracted hours of work were Mon-Fri 9-5, so I could only work outside these times. It was treated as if I had a second job as it was outside my contracted hours.

Can't remember if it affected my tax but I didn't notice any radical changes.

HTH.

I was thinking the same thing when considering my mat leave. I was hoping to do some part time work in a local clinic, just the odd session here and there. In the end i told my boss my plans and asked if this would be ok. Actually, I said that if it wasn't ok, I would have to resign as I could not survive on the paltry mat pay I was entitled to (not his fault at all, but needed to get the point across). He discussed it with personnel who said I wasn't supposed to, but in the end he agreed that as long as the new job didn't come into contact with the old job, no one would be the wiser and he had my support. I have been paid by the other job as if this is a second income and there doesn't seem to have been any problems. You could take a second job if you were working full-time, so why not now? HTH

I was told I couldn't do other work during paid or unpaid mat leave. However, in my letter detailing the terms of my mat leave it only says that I can't during the paid part which i think is fair enough. They did say during the meeting that what they don't know won't hurt them IYSWIM! I am thinking of doing some agency work during my unpaid time, it is that or go back to work!!!
