Dilemma

I’ve been doing my occupation for 20 years my current workplace since 2014.

I had a bad accident 2 years ago, and have been on amended duties for a long time now. Work have been understanding but recently they are pushing me into additional duties. I have more pending surgery and still in pain (it will be my 4th)

Anyway, I’ve been attempting these additional duties and I’m not enjoying it all.

I’m really unsure if it’s my injury that is making me feel like this or the general work place politics, attitudes of colleagues and management are making things feel very different.

Has anyone been in this situation? My husband thinks it’s my pain and I should see how I feel after my next surgery which is the total sensible thing to do but I just can’t shake the dread I feel on the days I need to go in to the work place.

To add- accident was not in the workplace.

You need to identify which additional duties are making which symptoms worse?
Present this to your line manager, maybe ask for referral to Occupational health.

It would seem reasonable to continue to avoid certain duties which make your symptoms worse until you get your next surgery and then review.

I’d ask to see occy health.

I’ve been asking for OH but they keep putting it off and now they are saying after my next surgery they will look into it.

Can they make you wait for OH? Surely if you ask for it they can’t say ‘ok but in 6 months’! x

There are two separate things here:

  • you’re not enjoying it for whatever reason, be that pain driven, actual work or culture
  • You sense they’re losing patience and are not happy with the extra duties.

The first is a tough one: you’re unlikely to get a different job if you’re going out sick for your 4th op soon so I’d try to stick with it.

The second is possibly true: there was more of a labour crunch a couple of years ago and that is somewhat abating. But they so sound like they will stick with it until the next op.

Frankly I’d stay quiet and have the op, then reassess.

Tbh I think it should have been done after my accident/ when I first returned back after my first surgery.

Yes all the points are true. Whatever it is I’m not enjoying it.

Yes your right I need to stick it out until my op for sick pay etc before deciding.
