I have an about-to-lapse CPE-do I really have to redo the course? Or is it possible just to do the exams?

Seeing as how, IIRC I got through the first time with a set of nutshells and quite a lot of Red Bull the idea of forking out £8000 for tuition is a bit dispiriting. And thats the OU asnd ILEX routes, btw-actually having lectures would = childcare costs for 3 kids.

Am not being arrogant but I seriously think I could get myself through this without tuition. Aside from the fact that I've done it before, and passed with good grades, my career needed a lot of the knowlege from the cpe (possibly more than a solicitor would). I'd obv buy the ilex manuals and work through them.

Am also at the cost of the course-I paid about £3500 to do mine about 8 years ago

thoughts?

I would think you could. Am in a similar(ish ) type of situation in that I passed my LPC nearly 8 years ago and am only now (possibly) getting a training contract - so I am thinking of dusting down old manuals and going through them in preparation, but LPC lasts, unlike CPE, fortunately. May try to obtain new ones if possibility becomes a certainty! From what I remember of CPE, it's pretty much cram it in, so I think you'll be fine. I didn't understand one word of equity and trusts due to crap lecturer but still managed to pass.

Are you planning to do LPC next?

no, was planning either to return to old career in charity/advice work (which I LOVED, but not so good for childcare if you actually wanted to get anywhere-would like to get into policy at a national level ideally)...OR patent/intellectual property work

First time round, I did all the mini-training contract stuff and did actually get offered contracts BUT...its too narrow for me.

But am looking online and it is really looking as though you need to do the COURSE-the CPE is a COURSE, not a set of exams -they've got a good one going there, haven't they?

Why do you want to do the CPE again if you don't want to go on to LPC?I think it only"expires" for the purpose of qualifying as a solicitor - ie going on to LPC. I work in charity sector and I have to say that only the solicitors know what the CPE is!Several people doing my current job have expired law degrees. Is it really necessary for what you want to do?
If it is necessary, could you contact local provider and see if they do any special courses for people in your position?

nah I do need it for what I do really. I am in quite a specialist area and competing against actual solicitors.

For either of the paths I want to do, I need to demonstrate up to date legal knowlege. I'd be ok if I wasn't planning on taking quite a lot of years out, but since I am, I need to play the game.
