I am currently a SAHM to two children nearly 5 and 2.5. I volunteer to take readers at my dd's school once a week when dd2 is in Nursery. I am also actively involved with the pre-school committee and the toddler group. Both of these committees are now giving me more headaches than pleasure (partly due to my inability to say no, or leave things for others...).
My question is will these sort of things look positive on a CV for when I return to the work place / apply to do my teacher training? I want to change my career when I go back to work and I am intending to up the level of my volunteering at dd's school when dd2 goes to Nursery five days, rather than the two she does currently. Should I keep going (and delegate more) because it will look good in the long run, or can I resign from these and use my volunteering at the school to pad out these child rearing years??? Any advice greatly received.
I am off to toddlers now so won't be able to respond until after the school run, but please post in the meantime for me.
Thank you.

I am course director for a vocational Masters course (which is related to education but is not education) and we would probably be more interested in the volunteering at school than in the committees. That may be unfair, as thinking about it the committees would show organisational and management-related skills (which would also be useful in our field) , but I think the working directly with kids would catch our eye more.

Thank you Kathy. That is helpful.
From my point of view the experience volunteering will be more important to me and more rewarding.....
Anyone else???

What about giving up the committee work you currently do, and approaching your local authority -the Children and Young People's Strategic Partnership or Early Educationa and Childcare Partnership would welcome a parent representative and that kind of strategic input would look great on a cv. They only meet 3 times a year but really like involvement from parents and carers The pres-school learning alliance similarly might like your input.

This way you could keep up your volunteering and have both hands-on and strategic additions to your CV.

Oooh, that is interesting thank you. I know my Early Years council contact through the toddler group...Great idea. I will investigate.
