Is it too ambitious?

So I have been in my current job for over 4 years. I am one of the more experienced members of my team (not to toot my own horn) and I really enjoy what I do. My job is very flexible and relaxed, and I WFH most of the time so have a great work life balance.

My company works on job grades with salary bandings for each grade. My current job is a grade 10, and the pay is fair but nothing to write home about.

There has been an internal vacancy for a role at my company for a similar but far more senior role, it's a job grade 12. I think that manager positions are also a 12 if that gives a good idea of the seniority. It's not a managerial role, but just a far more detailed and refined version of what I currently do.

I am definitely ready to progress further and a pay rise wouldn't hurt either.

Is it too big of a step up? Am I being too ambitious to even apply?

I guess i'm just nervous about the whole thing and looking for some advice!

TIA
X

Go for it!

If you don't try you'll never know.

At best you'll get the job and at worst you'll have gained valuable interview experience and also flagged yourself as someone looking for progression which will be remembered when other roles come up.

Good luck and believe in yourself!

It sounds a doable leap and you sound like you're ready for it. Definitely go for it.

Definitely go for it. The worst that can happen is that you don't get it, but you're on the radar for the next 11 band job that comes up.

Apply.

If you're wide of the mark, no interview and you just forget it. If you get an interview, give it your best. If nothing else, it shows them you're keen.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement!
You're all right - I've got nothing to lose so I'm going to go for it! I'll brush up my CV over the weekend! Appreciate all the advice :)

Apply for it.
If you don't get it (either at application or interview stage) ask for feedback, and use that to focus developing your skills, knowledge and experience.

Good luck.

Does your company allow people to be promoted more than one level at a time? I know where I work this wouldn't be possible.

Hi everyone!

I know it's been a while since I posted this but I just wanted to let you all know that I did apply, and yesterday I found out that I got the job!!!

Thank you again for all your words of encouragement, it gave the push I needed and paid off!

I know probably no one cares but I'm excited haha!

I don't think it's about how ambitious you are so much as how much support you get.

Is it NJC banding? I just left a grade 12 role, it was a massive step up for me but I was left to fend for myself and it was hell on earth.

If you have supportive boss and can discuss development areas etc as part of the interview process then go for it but if you think they'll want you to hit the ground running and leave you to it, seriously consider whether it will be worth it as the stress of being promoted without any support is terrible.
