Should I ask for a pay rise?

Name changed because I'm a frequent poster and it's outing and I have been sworn to confidentiality so can't speak to my work colleagues who I would normally, for advice.

I have worked for my current company for 10 years, they are a great company to work for and have always been supportive of me professionally and personally.

On Monday, my manager met with me to tell me that a manager was being put at risk and that they wanted to move his area of the business under my management.

This will add a whole other team under my management and I can see the sense of this and am excited for the challenge even though I know the increase in work will be quite a lot.

My manager spoke to me about succession planning and indicated that adding more strings to my bow will be beneficial for me taking the next step up (which I'd like to in the next few years)

However, I do wonder if I should ask for a pay rise to reflect the increase in my workload. Another manager working in a similar role (but different function) will have a smaller team than me and far less functions to oversee.

That said, like many businesses we have felt the impact of the cost of living and making redundancies is very rare for us so I don't want to be seen as "grabby" but they will be making a significant cost saving by not having this other manager in post and transferring his team to me.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and how did you approach it?

Yes, ask for a pay rise to reflect the increase in workload and responsibility, and for that to kick-in at the start of the transition.
A few years back I was in a similar position, colleague retired and I was asked to pick up his team. I asked for a pay rise and was told they will review it in 6 months, covid hit, then the recovery from covid, now it is all lost in the mists of time. I never did get that pay rise, and am moving jobs instead!

and get it in writing. So if you have a meeting, you follow up with an "as we discussed - bullet points of the important bits" email

good luck!
