Right to bonus if leaving part way through the year

Hi all,

I've got a question regarding my bonus that I was awarded last year and was wondering if you could help me.

I was awarded a bonus based on annual profits to July 2022 but it was to be paid over 12 months.

I have received 8 payments (so 4 remaining) however I am leaving at the end of the month (I'm working my notice currently). Am I entitled to the remaining bonus payments? I didn't get anything in writing ! :-(

Thanks

If you got nothing in writing then it's tricky but you might be able to use it to your advantage. It's unusual for a bonus to be paid monthly so I'd approach your manager and/or HR and say that you assume that the remainder of the bonus will be paid as a lump sum, as it relates to past performance. If they say that it won't be paid then you can ask on what basis (reward policy etc).

Nope. The reason companies spread them is to stop people having their bonus and leaving.
if you leave before it’s paid, you sacrifice the balance.

Depends on whether the bonus is contractual or discretionary.

If discretionary you'd be hard pressed to find any legal leverage in your favour but they may pay you.

If contractual then you've a stronger case for it to be paid depending on the detail of the contract.

Either way I'd email along the lines of what Allboundformoomooland has written.
