Maternity and New job question

Hello guys,
I need some help!
Basically, I am at a job to highly despise. I am currently working for the banking sector. However, previous to my current job I have been working for the NHS for the past five years.

I would like to return to the NHS and I have applied for a new job. I am trying to conceive at the moment, but I do not want to stay in the job waiting to get pregnant to then qualify for occupational maternity. I really do not like the job that I am currently in so therefore I have applied for another job.

My question is how long do I need to stay in the new NHS job for to then qualify occupational maternity pay?

Any guidance is much appreciated. Thank you!!

Didn't want to read and run so according to the Citizens Advice website employer has to pay you statutory mat pay if:

  • you work for your employer in the 15th week before your baby is due and have worked for them for at least 26 weeks before that
However I'm not sure if the NHS has different rules.

I have been in a similar situation before in that I had the option to apply for a promotion while TTC. I ultimately still applied as you don't know how long TTC will take and you should absolutely back yourself. As women I feel we don't put ourselves forward enough and worry too much about the "what ifs" - speaking from experience!

Hey thank you your reply. I'm dyslexic. Are you able to help interpret this for me.

I find it quite hard to understand

To be eligible for NHS maternity pay, you must have 1 year of continuous employment with the NHS (not necessarily the same trust), without a break of more than 3 months, by the time of 11 weeks before your expected week of childbirth.

How many months do I have to wait TTC once I have the nhs job before I can get pregnant or try again?

I'm so sorry if I'm being annoying!

@rimx oh that's so wordy! I think that means that you must have worked for the NHS for at least a year, by the time you hit 11 weeks prior to childbirth. So week 29 of pregnancy (just over 7 months).

If you were to start the job and then fall pregnant straight away, you would not qualify.

But even if you do not meet that criteria I think you would still qualify for statutory maternity pay as that is across the board. I presume the NHS maternity pay is higher.

Hi, sorry for jumping on this post. I am starting an nhs job too in October, we have done ivf but am waiting to implant when I’m eligible for occupational mat pay. I am extremely confused and cannot work out the wording whatsoever. I want to implant as soon as possible. When exactly could I implant the embryo in order to be eligible?

what I think it means is I cannot be any more than 7 months pregnant by the time I’m 12 months employed which will be October 2024,? And due date around December 2024? Meaning I could implant around March 2024. Have I got that right?
