Maternity Pay

Hi, I wasn’t sure which topic to ask the question under so hoping this is ok!

Currently TTC and planning savings for if I do get pregnant and go on Mat leave. My company offers 12 weeks at full pay and then SMP for the following 27 weeks.

On the gov uk website it says that SMP is paid at 90% of your average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks and then £172.48 for the next 33 weeks.

Does this mean I will get my 12 weeks full pay followed by 6 weeks at 90% of average weekly earnings and then £172.48 per week?
Or will I get 12 weeks full pay and then £172.48 per week for the remainder of my maternity leave?

Thank you ☺️

It’s the higher of . The 90% thing is for employees that don’t have a better maternity package. So the second one in your post.

My understanding is you will get OMP for 12 weeks then SMP

That’s great thank you both! I did think that was the case but just wanted to make sure 😁

No the 27 weeks will be at basic smp rate.

You will get SMP for 39 weeks.

As pp have said the first 6 weeks are at 90% of salary, which is topped up by your employer’s OMP to 100%.

For the next 33 weeks you will get SMP of £172.48 a week, for the first 6 weeks your employer will pay OMP to top it up to 100%.

Occupational maternity pay is usually inclusive of SMP, so the 90% would be covered by the first 6 weeks of the 12 you get fully paid for
