Term time job pay? To take the job or not

Hi all

ive been offered today a TA job at a local lower school which my youngest will be starting in September.
I cant get my head around term time pay 😖
advertised £20,258 FTE
I would be working 30 hours a week term time but would get paid all year round.

ATM I am a paediatric nursery nurse for the NHS and earn £1265 a month for 23 hours a week but I do night shifts, 19:30-06/08am.
Im so tired of nightshifts, I end up so tired and moody in the mornings getting my boys ready for school. It’s affecting my family life so much.

im in two minds what to do as I can’t take a massive pay cut but then have to think of myself and family life 🫣

Why don’t you email the HR department & ask them what the salary will actually be? Help you to decide.

Iminthemoneylife · 09/05/2023 20:36

I would email HR but a quick calculation I would say pay would be £1131 a month before deductions.

Dlc1991 · 09/05/2023 20:39

I have emailed the admin lady to ask what the actual salary would be. Hopefully hear something back tomorrow.
They were hoping I put in my notice at my current job tomorrow as they want me to start within 4 weeks.

You could try this to work it out

Take the annual pay and divide it by 52. Then multiply that by how many weeks you actually get paid (usually 39 + 5 weeks holiday so 44) that should give you your pay. Then divide by 12
Eg. 18000÷52×44=15230÷12= 1269

Hi OP

I work term-time only. If a standard working week is considered 37.5 by your "new" employer, then you first need to account for that. So 20,058 divided by 37.5 (or however many hours full time is) times by 30.

Then, you need to divide that figure by 52 (weeks in a year) and multiply by - usually - 44.6 (because TTO is 39 weeks and you're entitled to be paid for the legal minimum of 5.6 weeks of holiday per annum).

I make it 13,900 annually, or £1158 before deductions per month.

Dlc1991 · 09/05/2023 20:51

Thanks both of use. I’ve been doing so many calculations and getting different figures each time.
The bonus of it is I can work bank shift for the nhs in the school holidays to bump up my money. Got a lot to think about over the next few days.

Most schools are desperate for TAs at the moment ( I’m a TA) so I’m sure they do want you to start ASAP. However, don’t be pressured by them to resign before you are ready to. Make sure you get a reply first so you know if the figure you will get works for you or not.
It should be an easy question for them to answer as they will have other TAs working 30 hours on a term time contract. The only variable will be where you are on the scale compared to others.

You'd be a million miles better off trying to get a school nursing role, you'd be much higher paid.

Shinyandnew1 · 09/05/2023 20:52

I think a full time working week is 37 hours, and TAs are usually paid for about 42/3 weeks as it includes paid holiday , spread over 12 months. Some TAs are just paid term time only though.

Twiglets1 · 09/05/2023 20:53

Most TAs don’t get paid holidays. It just looks like we do because they divide our annual salary into 12 equal parts so we get paid the same every month.

I’m not a trained nurse unfortunately.
I have my level 3 in childcare which makes me a band 4 nursery nurse in the nhs

Yes I don’t think paid holiday is included. They said at interview that I would have to take a weeks unpaid leave when I get married next year in cyprus 😖

I thought everyone has to get paid holiday or holiday pay in lieu, so how does that work?

ChickenMacaroni · 09/05/2023 20:56

@Twiglets1 legally you should be paid for 5.6 weeks a year holidays, rolled into a contract that's paid in 12 equal parts. You should be paid for 44.6 weeks. Everyone is entitled to paid holiday.

ChickenMacaroni · 09/05/2023 20:59

@Dlc1991 that's totally fair enough because you're using up all your entitlement to paid holiday - 5.6 weeks inc bank Holidays - during the 13 weeks off (some paid, some unpaid) you get in the holidays. You'll be having 14 weeks off in 2024 so the additional week (Congratulations 😘) is, naturally, unpaid.

Yes sorry I meant we don’t get paid for all the school holidays, it just looks like we do because our salary is the same every month even August when we don’t go in at all.
We do get some paid holiday, about 5.6 weeks as you say ( can’t remember exactly).

Did the admin person get back to you? I’d be interested to know what the take home salary would be?

She said she would receive my contract in the next few days so will know the salary then.
