Help! IT Contracting or permanent roles

nobodywantstobeme · 09/05/2023 20:17

DP is a Program Mgr working for a bank (IT Contractor in UK). A series of projects that were scheduled to run to Christmas 2023 have been unexpectedly pulled and DP will have no more work after 26 May. He has been working on various projects at the same place for the last 5 years. CV and linkedin are being updated.

Any pointers to websites or resources for the latest guidelines/expectations for a well produced CV and linked in profile would be gratefully received.

And if anyone can recommend any recruitment companies/websites/groups that would be a real bonus.

Happy for anyone to PM me if they would prefer.

Thank you

Subscribing to LinkedIn premium for a month is worth it's weight in gold for this type of advice. They have fantastic series on how to construct a CV/prepare for interviews.

With regard to contracting vis-de-vis perm
I suggest a spreadsheet listing all the added value of a permanent job (pension/healthcare etc) plus avg salary and comparing with average contract take home rates (looking at both inside and outside IR35 options, although much less of the latter), remembering to factor in holiday days and added costs of contracting, like accounting fees and insurance. That would help to assess if it is worth the risk.

Every organisation I know is crying out for good IT staff. In their shoes, I'd be contacting everyone I am still in touch with, looking for ways in which they might make a contribution.

I wouldn't expect it to take long to find a new role.

I’m MD for UK for a big tech recruitment firm, the job market is still fine. Still plenty of both perm and contract jobs in your husband’s area of expertise but as you’ve found contracts are unpredictable (very much client dependent). If he wants to stay contracting he will be able to but needs to constantly be networking in case a 12 month contract ends up being 6 etc Feel free to PM me and I can put him in touch with someone here. If it makes you feel better, my partner is in tech and made redundant 1st day back in Jan and despite what I do I was nervy about what the economy was doing- he’s found a much better (pay and content) role so really don’t worry!!
