I just need a little moan really.

In short, I hate working from home, for a lot of reasons. Always have done. The Main reason being I just don’t work well and my output suffers terribly. I also find it very isolating as I live on my own and have a small circle of friends. The office is open but nobody goes in, so it doesn’t help me. A lot of the team work 100% remotely.

Sounds dramatic but I just can’t do it anymore. It’s so frustrating because I know I am capable of progressing but I simply cannot work from home.

I have been looking for new jobs for about 6 months but nobody is looking for my role. I could quit but I would still have a 3 month notice period to work!

I have a dr appt next week and was considering asking to be signed off (I’ve spoken to him about work stress before) but that’s not ideal either because I feel like it’s just a temporary measure.

UGH.

go into the office if you prefer it

Haus1234 · 06/05/2023 16:52

What’s your job? There must be other companies who work in the office more that you could go and work for instead? I have to be in the office 4 days per week minimum and it suits me well as I struggle to motivate myself at home as you do!

Can you work in a cafe, library or hire a shared office space regularly to break up your week? I find a mix of wfh and office is much better and I appreciate both then.

I work in private client tax so it wouldn’t really be appropriate to work in a public place, annoyingly. Otherwise I would even if just for half a day!

Other firms definitely are in the office more than this place - my old firm was! But I had to leave that job to move closer to home, so now I’m in a small city and jobs in tax don’t come up often.

There's a site called Flown where you work 'with' other people (you're on video, but you check in with each other at the start and end and let each other know if you've achieved your goals in the session - obviously you can be vague if needed for privacy).

Could that help in the meantime? A lot of the same people do it each day, so you'd end up knowing people.

Have you posted about this before? Because if not there's another MN user in private client tax also struggling with WFH. So you're not alone.

How heavily specialised are you? There will be more generalist roles in high street practices.

Or you could leave tax entirely. That seems a popular career choice in the sector lately.
