Managing a work FB account

Hi, I work in an organisation that manages highly sensitive material. I've been asked to manage the organisation's public Facebook page, but to do so I would have to link it to my personal FB account as FB doesnt allow secondary accounts (attached to a work email) to manage a business page.

I think this is a potential GDPR issue as well as a blurring of private/personal boundaries. I wondered if anyone had any advice, thanks.

Just create a new random email address - yahoo, mail, gmail etc - and use that to make a new FB profile that you use only for work. Link the business page to the new fake you.

Is there not already a fake account to manage the business page? Definitely don't link your personal account.

ohidoliketobe · 02/05/2023 15:42

Yep as above, when I set up my dad's business page I set up a new email ([email protected]), set up a new profile - mydadsbusiness and used that to set up the new page as I didn't want my personal page to be spammed with notifications

Thanks. The issue here is that FB are closing any "grey" admin accounts they find and insisting on ID to verify if they suspect a grey account. One of the giveaways being a lack of friends on a faux acct. I was hoping to hear that others, who manage large organisation FB pages, had found a way to legitimately run a corporate page from a dedicated professional account/email rather than going to the trouble of creating a fake mcfake account.

Couldn't you make an account just for this purpose and still verify with ID if they ask for it?

It's not about them knowing who you are or that you own the account, it's more that you don't want to blur the boundaries of work and personal.

Set it up with the business email and make yourself an admin on the business page that will allow you to make posts etc....do not link it to your personal page.

Also make sure that you have made sure that FB is a business page and not a personal page when it was set up.

Thanks all. I have had my work account verified with ID but FB have decided to permanently restrict it anyway (so I cannot advertise) and there's a chance we could lose the page entirely because I'm not accessing it via my private account.

I really resent this FB policy and think I need to look for a different job. I thought GDPR rules meant FB couldn't force me, an employee, to run around with sensitive work information accessible on my private phone but apparently I'm wrong 🙄

It does feel utterly bizarre that FB are making it harder for business to monetize on their platform. Don't FB get a cut of ad revenue and similar? Are the only organisations on there meant to be local sellers running a business as a sideline? Very strange. I wondered if maybe larger organisations are meant to use Meta Business Suite instead but I couldn't really see any evidence that this allows you to manage things without a personal FB account?

Greenfairydust · 02/05/2023 17:18

It is so nonsensical for Facebook to do that...

I had no Facebook account, as I really don't like them as a company, but had to set one up with my personal email just so that I could be added as an Admin for the company Facebook account which I manage.

I don't post anything on that personal account. It purely exists for work purposes.

I would be very uncomfortable to have had to link a Facebook account that I actually used to chat with friends/post regular content with a work Facebook account.

Pigsinspaaace · 02/05/2023 17:38

Thanks for your comments. It doesn't make any sense at all.

And no Meta Business doesn't make a difference apparently. I'm really disgusted by this, tbh. This is a major company and my colleagues, who've gone ahead, find there's no privacy.

They get notifications and emails to their personal email addresses, and FB is constantly trying to get them to connect all their personal contacts to their work page. They have to opt in to see their own page over work's. It's such a blatant invasion of privacy.

We have encountered this issue at work. People creating a duplicate account to manage thr page ended up having their personal accounts deleted by Facebook and all their photos etc lost. So be really careful with duplicate accounts. It seems ridiculous to need a personal profile to run a business page, I don't understand their logic at all.
