Thank you I saw that but it is a bit general and would like people that have made the transition from other jobs to perhaps give their advice.

Thank you very much though

What is your current job? Do you work in an organisation that already has a business development team/ bid writers?

If so, I would start by asking them if they'd spare a few mins to talk to you about their roles and how they got into it.

Tell them you're interested in moving your career in that direction and ask them if there are any opportunities for any shadowing or work experience coming up.

I am not entirely sure what you are talking about as you've been very vague but I'll have a stab at answering and hope that this helps.
We have to write bid proposals - it's not a job as such in our organisation - more part of everyone's job, the team who are going to do the job are usually involved in writing the bid proposal, drawing knowledge from historical projects and opinions from different areas of the business and often drawing in external with special knowledge. So you learn the job and you write the bid. People who have not been involved in doing the work can help with the less technical admin side this is often left to the more junior staff. I agree with @sapphiredrago if you want to change the direction of your career then speak to your manager and the manager who is involved in business development - it all depends on your company structure.

One thing to consider with this is the potential impact of AI on the role. Chat GPT etc are proving pretty good at writing general text for marketing and bid type docs - obviously human input is still needed to guide the process and refine the output but might mean there is less of this type of work to go round in the near future?

Yes we have a business development team, but I am not sure where it is located. I would like to ask, but they don't seem to want you to leave the team you are in. No training opportunities, except for first aid and fire marshal!

I think the Chat thing sounds like it will take over everyone's job at this rate!

@2nd Past friends who Ai have list touch with we're hired as Bid writers/managers. I thought I'd was an actual role you apply for.

It is just the usual issue, how do you get experience if you can't get experience in the role. I always wonder when people talk about changing their careers, how they get people to give them a chance with no experience.

It depends on the industry you are in and the company you work for, our bids require very senior manager input - the wrong bid could cost us dearly so it's not something we give to people as a starting role - they might do an initial stab at but it's a complex role that requires a deep understanding of the job. Again it depends on the industry
Why don't you want to learn the job first why do you want to be a bid writer?

winkeotwhen · 02/05/2023 22:21

I don't want to waste time doing expensive courses, as ultimately they will still require experience.

The people I know who do it, didn't do courses, they fell into by chance.

My team is recruiting for a bids manager at the moment. We basically want someone who can help with the admin side of bids/proposals rather than the subject matter content - I think our job advert specifically states that you don't need to know the subject matter. We just want someone who takes initiative, is very organised, is happy to chase people to complete their bits of a bid. Some of our proposals and bids are very long with lots of sections and so you need to be on top of the content and shepherd it along.

winkeotwhen · 02/05/2023 22:23

@mynameiscalypso That is how I understand bids to work. Each person doing their part.
