Phone call after interviews

I’ve applied for a corporate job with a big name and had 2 interviews so far and emails from them saying they’ve not made a decision yet.

Today I got an email from one of the interviewers asking to speak to me via phone tomorrow.

I suppose it could be an offer or rejection, but in my experience a rejection is usually by email. Or is it?

Does anyone have previous experience of this and the outcome?

When I had this, they had decided to restructure the team so the role I interviewed for didn't really exist anymore so they wanted to ask about whether I would be interested in a new/slightly different role.

In my experience rejections don't usually merit a phone call. So fingers crossed it's good news

AgnesGray · 27/04/2023 17:05

Fingers crossed for you and I do think phone calls usually mean you might get offered it.

But I have had similar to a pp where they decided not to hire anyone (tried not to take it personally 😂)

Of the four interviews I did last month, three said they'd phone once a decision had been made, either to offer the job or to give feedback on the interview.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 27/04/2023 17:08

Thanks all so far for the responses!

Now I don’t know which way it’ll go and trying not to stress or get excited about it. Time for a warm bath and camomile tea later.

Good luck!! I would say that unless they had indicated beforehand that they like to give verbal feedback either way, I'd be inclined to think it may be good news...

This role, someone else within the organisation was doing this role, helping out but had gone back to her old role.

It was a strange set of interviews as the first one was great with both interviews. Second one was also good but I clicked better with the person I wouldn’t be working with (but covering for her PA). I was therefore surprised when I got an email to say they hadn’t decided anything yet but would be in touch this week.

I did interview (or do interview) very well though, so that was reassuring to me.

Thanks! Hopefully crossing fingers!

Its in a corporate role but they seemed really nice and forward thinking.

Just got to adjust to that world after 3-4 years contracting (government mostly) plus corporate contracts.

I may be unusual but I always speak to anyone I've interviewed whether or not I'm making an offer. They've given their time so it's the least I can do. Hopefully it's good news for you. Or maybe they are just polite like me!

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 27/04/2023 17:29

@Quveas, as I spent so long temping in contracts (one of which could’ve gone permanent but wasn’t for me!) I don’t want to get my hopes up but at the same time, a permanent job, with a very well respected company would solve a few issues for me!

We email rejections with constructive feedback and offer a phone call if the candidate wants it. A lot of people don't want to speak to someone when they are being rejected but they want time to get over the initial upset and then be in a better position to receive feedback when feelings aren't so raw.
Dd was offered a job over email with v limited info to make a decision. She enquired about the need for a chat to discuss the offer and they delayed by a week - they lost her to another firm who had their shit together.

Good luck! I think it's good news Flowers

Well after all that it was a no. Apparently it was down to me and another internal candidate (I’m external) and they had over 200 applicants and are going to keep my details on file and were very impressed with me.

Still feel like shit as it’s a no though. And a long wait to hear anything.

They did say I’d done really well and scored very highly in all interview areas so couldn’t really give feedback but wanted to let me know in person and soon so I wasn’t waiting.

Ah sorry to hear that OP. But you can hold your head high as they were clearly impressed with you.

Iamblossom · 28/04/2023 11:25

I'm very sorry to hear this, you must be disappointed.

When I read your thread yesterday I did think (based on my own experience only) that this was what they were going to call you about. It is a courtesy and you should see it as a positive that they wanted to tell you directly, rather than a shit dismissive email.

You obviously did a great job... Hiring from within derisks things for them, and also contributes to the optics they need to display regarding promoting their own people.

Still a no for you, however you dress it up, but be proud of yourself, and as they say "what is for you won't go past you". You will get a better, more suitable job I'm sure.

🤗

@Iamblossom

Its ok. I am disappointed especially as I’ve applied for a few roles recently and most (as in different fields) have been a no. Which is fine.

I get that it’s an employers market rather than an employees market but just feel a bit shit knowing that an internal candidate was hired as it de risks things for them and promotes their own people. Funnily enough when I spoke to someone to ask them about why this role was vacant they did mention a colleague had been covering but left to work in another department.

I know I did a great job as I always do in interviews!

Doesn’t help that I’ve got a bad cold:virus so feel rubbish generally.

Anyway, onwards and upwards!

Thanks for your feedback.
